Do you like it underneath like a rock band guiding the track and giving it a more full feel

or

Mid Bass LINES - a la Cypress Hill and Drum and Bass, where the "bass Line" IS the song, carrying the main bulk of the tune on its back...

or

Bass On The Kick - a la Nas, where the bass coinsides with the kick creating a bouncy feel

personaly i would say i use Mid Bass, as you can get the darkness out of the mid, and the pounding drive, but that is just my style....

anyone else care to discuss the finer points of Bass lines and their use in hip hop please go ahead....

I like a low sub bass kinda sound on the bassdrum like a low 808 kick with a slow attack and long decay.
I also like to place my bass on the backbeat in between the kick and snare.
the sound of the bass depends on what is good for the track.

I like 'em all. I use 'em all too.
You can' always use the same kind because certain one's sound better at different times. But my favorite would be the Cypress one you talking about.

Like em mono and analogue, or contra bass and since I lack the classic touch of engineering rockbands, I set my basses the "dancemusic" steelo, kick to the front and the bass behind it. Basses are very seldom on the kick, like i try to arrange/program/play the basslines between the beats and not specificly Q'd upon 1/4 measures, so mostly I go to 1/3 or 1/6 to expand the bassline score to 2 or 4 bars. When looking into basslines in themes, you can have you basslines floating between basskicks and on a bridge/hook I tend to set the basslines a bit more punctional, so on the 1/8's ( stabbed ).

Im also hooked on the 808, if there's a 808 sub resonating in my skull I wont be using much of other bass. What i could do is top it off by adding a 606 to drumtrack. So in this given I do not think every track needs a bassline.

Favorit bass tools I use,

Novation Drumstation ( 808/909 )
Kawai F100 ( analogue monosynth )
SE - ATC1 ( analgue monosynth, 303, EM unit )
Focusrite Compounder - comp with bass expander ( normal or huge )
