Hey been making beats on fruity for while just wondering how u get that super clear sound like you hear on beats from cats like 9th wonder. I've tried eq, filtering ,and compression messing with settings and stuff in programs such as sound forge and cool edit when mastering beats but can't seem to get quite as close to how you hear commercial cd's and beats from cats such as 9th using software?

watup d man, am from birmingham too. what ends u from?
anyway to ur question, i doubt 9th wonder does all the mastering himself, they usually send the tracks off to a qualified engineer who has thousands of pounds worth of equipment. u can still get good quality at home tho, jus perfect ur eq/filtering/compression etc skills

^^^thats the spirit.

yo i think compression aint gonna do much as far as clarity is concerned.

its mostly to do with panning and eq. you want to make sure sounds arnt fighting for the same sonic space. and also clean up any unwanted frequencies in sounds using a notch or parametric eq.

what is your definition of a "good mix" though.

that's the egineers job. i just export each track as a seperate wavefore and sell it then the studio egineer takes care of the mixing himself. that's his job.

You can try panning, adjusting the volume, eq the instruments to different frequencies etc, but you will never get the commercial CD sound unless you get some of the production companies who do those CD's to do it for you...

yea basically you can use your EQ's to sort out the sound somewhat but people like 9th wonder have there beats mastered by pros who have trained for years to do it and get paid a lot of money to do it with a big studio full of stuff, thats not to say you can't make a difference but don't expect your beats to sound as crisp as theres aim for it but don't expect it !

thanks for the feedback guys to africa deluxe i'm from West brom mate not to far from brum. Have you ever listened to 9th's beats on headphones then you'll now what i mean proper crisp eqing esp on the snares but still rugged in a hip hop sense.

When it comes to clear sounds I think it is important what sample bit rate u r using. The higher the bitrate, the clearer the sound. Check out some of my beats, I think my sound is pretty clear.

That's a funny question.

First of all your workin with fruity loops. Meanin your usin cheap sounds of fruity loops or u use your own samples.

In both case, you needa make sure sound your using are good quality and THEY GOT NO NOISE.

Second, you work on a pc with probably a low value sound card.

Third, you're workin with effects that generate noise!! Yes it's true, low noise effect cost the price. Waves, Timeworks, Steinberg, any pc effect WILL DO NOISE. Ask any professionnal. you need to invest in hi-quality hardware effects, AND hi quality wires, or buy dedicated processors like Mackie UAD1/TC Powecore Firewire.

Fourth, after the beatmaker took care to build a song with the most clean possible sounds and samples, he gives the multitrack to a mix engineer, who will process each track separately. Then the mix engineer will give the mixdown to a mastering engineer, who will re-process the whole song.

And all of that with top notch equipment, and years of experience!!!

You can achieve nowadays mix at home that will challenge with the most equipped studios,
but you need a few years experience, and a minimum of stuff. Good monitors, good effects, a good interface/card, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT : good material to work with AND good ears.

Like honesty said, it's the GIGO rule : Garbage In, Garbage Out. (You'll hear that used by pro engineers)

If you want good sound to work with, try cubase or any VST host DAW, and some VST instruments. And if you got the budget, buy some synths or modules, like motif, triton, fantom or JV/XV from Roland. As well as many others like E-Mu's, there's a lot on the market used for not so expensive.

I do that , kind of. If I want a clean track I use clean elements. But you know every since I've started producing on the PC, my sound has improve 80%! My mixes sound like shit but a skilled engineer can really work with my shit now! I did tracks called "Lazy Daisy" and "Settle The Score" on hardware. You can hear the roughness. Everything else was done on PC.

Another thing is keeping the composition simple don't over do it with loops and shit. Beats don't have to be complicated arrangements... they are just cosmetic backgrounds for your artist. No need to OUT-SHINE the MC, right? lol Just motivate his ass!

Ease up on effects the dry sound ias back... well if you like that Neptunes "minimal" type production shit (AND I DO!)

Make sure u using nice sounding samples from da start, make the samples as hot as possible b4 starting, and try not to Boost EQ Frequencies to make it sound better, u should always CUT frequencies to make it sound betta. and where are the sounds from? maybe u need to record the samples better. as honesty mentioned, u only get out what u put in, so if u puttin in straight garbage dont expect a commercial soundin masterpiece
