I'm browsing the internet right now looking for a general "How-To" thread. I want to learn to make a bunch of different genre defining sounds.

You mean synsthesis/sound design? As in how to make (insert genre and artist) sound?

There is no easy "how to" when it comes to sound synthesis. You need to learn about synthesizers, wave types and ADSR(Attack Decay Sustain Release). And as for genre specific, thats up to the sound engineer/producer to decide whats relevant to what they want to acheive or not. You can be given advice on what synthesisers have good specific sounds by people with experience with said synthesizers. As with all things music related, it takes time and experience, its a learning curve, that takes a lot of time and dedication to pick up. I would advise getting a software program like reason that has 3 decent synthesizers built in, which you can slowly figure out by playing with them yourself, or failing that, go on a sound engineering course.
It really does take time and you have to put the work in.
If you think you can get a book and it all becomes clear overnight, you are mistaken.
