Man you guys went all out on this topic. I ask my friend who owns a studio about this sub thing. He told me that a room size does make a differnce but you can get smaller near field monitor no moe than 8" and then use a home theatre system or some type of boom box with a bass button to test your sound. Even though you can get the true sound in a small room. It will be hard to mix the frequency corret. Check he out, I'm in the refernces also as HardKNOTZ-

Besides deadening your room, here's a couple more tips for making up for the low-end loss in a small room:

-put the sub in the corner of the room. each wall adds 3dB, and you need not know where the bass is coming from. You won't hear its direction, but adding 6dB in the corner of the room helps add bass.

-bump the sub levels so that it's closer to flat. You'll have a lot of compensating to do, but if you put the time in, it could be worth it. You may even want to get a really flat mic with a spectrum analyzer and see where your levels are. Amplify your low frequencies accordingly.

-add an a-b switch for your sub to turn it on and off during your mix. This helps so that your ears don't play tricks on you. There will be some dead spots and many frequencies that you can't hear in that room anyway, so your ears will be straining.

-every now & then, walk outside your room while playing the sub. You'll notice the bass may be louder outside the room than inside. Use this as a reference.

-ALWAYS use other systems for reference. Cars are the best reference, as that's the most preferred listening spot. Use ipod earbuds, as everybody and their grandma has an ipod. Use shitty boomboxes and make sure the speakers don't fart from your low end.

Other than that, good luck. Cuz you'll NEVER reproduce bass in a small room! Ha.

damn, i want to get a sub so bad, but seems pointless now. it will at least be good for just listening to music tho right, even if its not 100% accurate? all those crappy pc speaker systems come with subs and they sound pretty aight
