Have ANY of you solicited a manager or agent? What are your thoughts? I'm curious.

Here are my questions:

1. I'm curious, have ANY of you guys actively seeked representation by soliciting managers or agents?

Yes, back in 2005 -06 i was just getting outta college and i was seriously looking for representation locally for a few months. But all my leads were hacks and/or shady figures. So i stopped looking. I figured that somehow I had to get bigger so the real managers will look for me and actually care about my/our future....or move outta NC.


2. How does success or failure in getting representation affect you as an artist? Do you just keep grindin' or do you "feel the hit" emotionally?

It affects me as far as having time to work both ends of the game. Its hard to make beats and do PR for yourself too. I'm always in a situation where i feel im either not making enough music, or im not promoting enough and closing deals. And with my full-time job & my other business ventures, I feel the hit for sure, but time management is key. I feel like im making great sacrifices, something has to give. I can deal with it, I still grind when able. But I must admit, it would be A LOT easier if i had a manager.


3. Have any of you even sent multiple press kits/packages to a list of people from a music industry database? (like sending 30-60 press kits/packages to managers and agents?

Nope. I do have a one-sheet press kit, but I barely use that joint unless asked for it. I became completely uninterested in chasing these industry people. The more i study my situation, the more i realize its gonna take me to create the buzz and for them to come to me. There's way too many producers out there. Its so over saturated its disgusting. I feel like i'd just get lost in the pile of demo tapes/e-presskits under these peoples desks. So why exert the energy. There's another way in. <<< Thats how i look the music industry now. I can't get in like the rest of these kats sending demos and doing beat battles. I'ma find my own way in.


4. Do you think that "being an artist" you have a "different mindset" than most people? Do people view/treat you differently... like
- "Oh, dude's weird - but he makes tight beats."
- "Yeah, he's talented, but crazy."
- "He's cool, but dude just acts DIFFERENT."


Yes. Im weird/crazy/different. Thats what i either need to come into terms with or fix. I believe my weirdness fucks/fucked up some good opportunities. I come off as unapproachable/hard/dry/shy/arrogant. I feel like my networking skills kill me the most.....and networking is 70% of the battle. I got so much to offer, but i can't sell myself like the next man. So now im reading books & putting myself in social situations to be a better communicator just as much as i am an artist. A work in progress.

This is a qualifier that makes this a NON-BUSINESS post. Do you think your artistic mindset might actually hinder your success in any way?

(Please answer ALL of the q's if you can, because that would be VERY helpful for a situation I'm trying to understand w/a person.)

1. Nope but I've had a few people come to me.

2. I believe you can make it without mgt. You just have to hustle more.

3. Nope. I am currently not in rush to enter the game, not sure if its for me either so I haven't done anything super "hustley" like sending out multiple press kits.

4. Mindset? I still find it weird calling myself an artist. Music came to me when I was in my early teens so the fact that I am an artist is still only sinking in. There are stereotypes of artists, but I don't think I fit them. Artists are supposed to be emotional, I tend to be very logical. However I hear a lot of artists are left-handed, and I am left handed. People view me the same. I do have a wide range of interests (evident in my genre jumping in beats) and will often connect the seemingly unconnected (evident in my assignments at university) to make a point, is that artistic? Maybe so. So do I have a different mindset? I think so, but it also goes beyond the music stuff too. I have only met a few people on the same wavelength.

5. Answer is dependent on one's definition of success. I think if we are talking in terms of record sales and popularity then yes, artistic mindsets are capable of hindering success if not kept in check.

Personally I call that intelligence.
I try to do that all the time, especially when playing devils advocate.
