Why does this seem like a bunch of senseless organizational information that will only lead to nowhere? this whole industry and the cats running it are profitiers so anything that concentrates on profit alone has no good ethics...thats why I make this music for free. Hopefully by doing this soon the industry will no longer be able to sell and profit from no more bullshit music (yeah right lol). I know I kinda went a lil off topic...but when I seen this lil organizational structure as far hooks and songs it kinda urked me an a way because...first these mufuckas throw that demo shit away for starters and at the end of the day...you only get raped by labels...you cant stop it. Just build your own fan base buy putting out good music like the "Smash Bros"...it might be slow money...but its yo money and it sho money. That demo shit is dead...cats wanna see dvd's of shows, blogs, etc.

I am here trying to give you tips on how to better the demo that's part of your larger press package - and you KNOCK me for it? Seriously man, I can feel the emotion on the other side and your bitterness:

- You sound like a frustrated failed artist that justifies his failure by attacking everyone else except himself (sorry man, if you start with the attacks now - I will, but only if provoked).

- You attack DreamPolice, I mean - he has walked the walk and understands that AGENTS and MANAGERS count. Maybe he wasn't successful due to the myriad of things that can happen to destroy a band (like a heroin-addicted songwriter) or they didn't pen any huge "hits". You try to even attack his post section-by-section to protect your ego and its failures.

- "It's the industry... fuck the industry, they're the problem." The industry is and still will be around even if record companies are gone. You need representation to play live shows that actually pay a ton of money and book world tours (and live off that revenue, instead of couch surfing.)

- You blame others but don't look at YOURSELF and see how YOU can CHANGE for the better, and alter your actions to try to succeed. Man, after reading your post all I can saw is that you wake up.

MUSIC is a BUSINESS. You can CHANGE and make money but you have to THINK like a BUSINESSMAN to do so.

1. I had a agent when I was a full time musician in a rock band. A very good one at that. We got loads of radio play and toured like crazy. And really that's all we wanted.

The reason they say they want three song demos is because most people don't know how to format the CD in a "hook-first" way so the rep can just breeze through the hottest choruses of each song, see if it's catchy and then commit to listening to the whole song. So to save time, they just say: "give us your three best songs" because they know most people's submissions will suck and they are saving themselves time. They'll listen to the first song and if the payoff sucks (the chorus), they rarely go to the second or third track. And you, as an artist, just wasted your time.

Did you send a CD with your press kit that was AS IS... meaning, with the only audio representation of yourselves as a full album?

My two cents would be to have a "promo CD" with the hottest hook as track one, then full song that has the hook in track one as "track 2." Select only the songs you think are hot/marketable enough... kinda like this:

1. Hot hook/chorus #1 (30 sec.)
2. Full song #1 w/hot hook #1 (3:35)
3. Hot hook/chorus #2 (25 sec.)
4. Full song #2 containing hot hook #2 (3:12)
And so forth...

So if you're the hottest hook from your album is on a track called "Fire and Water" it would be like this:
1. "Fire and Ice" Chorus/hook (30 seconds)
2. "Fire and Ice" full song (3:35)
3. "Pork and Steak" chorus/hook (25 seconds)
4. "Pork and Steak" full song (3:12)

People just want to listen to what's hot first. I've even seen it done where the first track listings like 1-6 are filled with the hooks, and the full songs are after the hooks in tracks 7-13.

If anyone does this, holla on this thread, I would like your input on this. Most cats that don't have a lot of time WILL NOT sit down and listen to a whole fucking album or a hot track.

They will listen to the first 15 seconds of your hot track.

If you have the hot hooks listed so they can just listen to that - they tend to listen to MOST of them, since they feel they're not wasting that much time listening to the "best" part of your songs. Counter-intuitive isn't it?

They have a greater time-investment when they just listen to your hooks, hence they may even listen to the full tracks. It saves a lot of time than fast forwarding to the payoff, which is usually the chorus. If the rep invests time in ONE SONG through the verse and the chorus sucks - they won't bother with the other songs... unless you have all the hot choruses/hooks edited for them to listen to.

Let's say, for argument's sake you wrote the songs for Lil' Wayne, MIMS and 50 Cent. It would be like this:
1. "Lollipop" chorus/hook (34 sec.)
2. "Lollipop" full song (3:42)
3. "In Da Club" chorus/hook (22 sec.)
4. "In Da Club" full song (4:03)
5. "This Is Why I'm Hot" chorus/hook (24 sec.)
6. "This is Why I'm Hot" full song (3:32)

OR

1. "Lollipop" chorus/hook (34 sec.)
2. "In Da Club" chorus/hook (22 sec.)
3. "This Is Why I'm Hot" chorus/hook (24 sec.)
4. "Lollipop" full song (3:42)
5. "In Da Club" full song (4:03)

Sometimes you can use "chorus" or "hook" as terminology. Hook has a more positive connotation to it that just "chorus". I don't know why that is.

That's the way shit works. I'll just say a friend of mine who once worked at MTV saw it happen that way.

In my discussions with a lot of managers lately, "presenting the hook" in press packaging is becoming more and more effective, to the point where I've seen talent shows where established hip-hop/R&B managers were judging and would watch the artist perform and talk with the artist afterwards to "buy the hook" or at least come up with a creative way to steal it lol.

ya Band broke up, and I hated being on the road. Waking up in a different city every day, I was just not built for that. I have started playing live again and found that I did still love that so maybe going back on the road now may be an opition. We did not have any huge hits, I do still get royality checks. But they are only enough for maybe my cable bill and a night on the town with my wife every month lol. When I went to being a full time engineer I loved it! Did that for many years but the 40 hour weekends caught up to me. Working at SW has been great to fill the gap for now.

Yea its been over 2 months
Well we got some good reviews on various sites, (people were supriised that a quality product came from a bunch of nobodies)
we got one whack ass review on okayplayer, we got cats emailing showing interest but nothing solid, whats funny is that the biggest buzz we got was when our album leaked... Now you can find our shit all over the freaking internet(china, Japan , Us blog sites) That has lead to a couple interviews for some forgien internet hip hop sites. But all in all, the response so far as performing or lables showing interest or even interviews has been luke warm at best.. I think alot of it has to do that we have no real support, no PR(we do it ourselves) and nobody has heard of us.....That will change with time

for the physical press kits Yes we sent our CD with a breif bio we thought that people seeing a complete finished product was our biggest asset(professinal looking CD packaging) In retrospect, your idea probolly would have worked better and for the next go around we probolly will make some promo CD's for the press kit. Now with digital Version of our press kit we had more flexabilitity, we emailed them the complete album, with some photos and video from our performance, we also gave them a link to our digital press kit which can be found here..http://www.smashenterprise.com/ which has our bio, interviews/performances and photos. HOlmz also linked to his blog which can be found here http://www.smashenterprise.blogspot.com/ . I feel like you have alot more flexabilitty with a digital press kit

I mean, U can hope, wish, pray and perform and Exorcism on the industry and hip hop in general, but guess what, is not going back to what some would call it's hay day. Time may repeat itself on some level but it never reverses itself. SHIT KEEPS MOVIN', U EITHER MOVE WITH IT OR GET LEFT BEHIND. No matter if it's for the better or worse, it just keeps chuggin' along. I always say "You can't stand on the side line hating on the starting players in hopes that your disdain for the starters will get you in the game", U can never change the game from the outside looking in!

If those same "haters" would support what they think is "the shit", financially and otherwise, maybe what they think is the shit aka "good music" would be making a profit! Just for example: T-Pain and Soulja boy's (picked them because most think their DO DO) labels didn't pour massive amounts of money into to there product because they "thought" they would blow the fuck up. They "blew the fuck" up in the streets which caused the labels to support them in a major way. They made those labels "stooopid" money. Very few artist make labels "stooopid money". It's the consumer that paid that "stooopid" money. SO AIM YOUR HATE ARROWS AT THE CONSUMERS THAT SUPPORT THESE DUDES AND NOT YOUR DUDE instead of hating the GAME!

This game is not going to stop, pause or rewind for any of us so if it's that bad to you? You could always work at a museum (lol, j/k), flip burgers or just plainly DO SOMETHING ELSE! Everybody's entitled to there opinions but some just go WAY over board with it and in the form of complete and total negativity!

YES YES YES! There ARE people who understand, so I don't feel like I'm talking to a brick wall. The hook is what usually MATTERS the MOST. It is the most marketable portion of a song. It can show up on TV ads, it is what most people remember from a song.

This is why cats do the promo Cd in their press kit with the "hook-first" format.

I know cats in your situation. You know what being on "the inside" (in a relative way) feels like. For example, if you had a shitty tour manager that would ride your asses everyday - you did everything possible to get the label to dump his stupid ass.

You know how agents can come up with the craziest pitches to create an extra revenue stream for you, from being in magazine photo shoots to playing at some crazy event that pays a ton of money.

You have nothing solid because while you were riding your crest of buzz, you should have been soliciting managers and agents to secure you real shows or have THEIR PR people create buzz for you.

A lot of stories about how artists are discovered are actually created/imagined up AFTER the artist with a marketable song goes to a manager, etc. People believe that shit and it becomes part of lore (you would not believe how many times this happens.)

CHANGE your digital press kit. I looked at it, it looks like a MySpace page but... it's not a MySpace page. You should have a toolbar with easy links to video, music, etc.

Look man, as far as your physical kit goes, hand the full cd but burn and "CD stomp" the promo CD with it (the hooks lined up first). Tell them the full songs are on the full CD (this might confuse them - you want to avoid confusion, so do an "either/or" on this.)

You guys made your stuff sound "pro" enough - you need representation of some sort to take you to the next level.

As far as physical press kits. Did you add a cover letter to personalize it? Lyric sheet? Was it in a branded folder? 8 1/2 x 11 group photo (b+w)? Any other cool stuff to put in there?

I've seen a PK from a group that had a fucking... TRANSFORMER toy in it. It was awesome because it fit their image (and probably cost a lot of money). Another had a mini super-soaker in it (fit with the name of their project.)

Guess what, the reps listened to those cats. I know it sounds dumb, but if you have a cool "addition" to the PK that is representative of something in your music, it works.

Unfortunately, if you're sending 100 PKs with a transformer, that gets mighty expensive. But those guys had managers who probably paid for it.

I'm just telling you how it is. Pink Floyd had a rubber pig in their PK for their "Animals" album.

God & Dream I really apologize for coming off so harsh...and maybe you are right about me being bitter and shit...but why am I bitter? because I remember how lovely the music industry used to be...and how people used to get on because of the talent... look the whole world is a stage yo...anything can be setup...even a fake ass music industry...if you beleive in this fakeness then thats youre problem...t pain is ok and soulja boi sucks ass...the world knows this. but I have a couple questions for you G, if you don't mind answering in an open forum...(not as legal advice of course.lol)

1. Should the artist do as many shows as possible beforehand, or does that matter when submitting a press kit to a manager? I mean, wouldn't the manager in turn be the one helping you to get shows?

2. How would you say a Producer( not a rapper/singer)format their c.d., would they use the same formula with the Chorus/Hook instrumental for 30 seconds? Or is it different because there is no rapper on it. I'm interested in knowing if producers should handle this differently.

on the real though, I just want to thank you guys for the insight on threads like these... overall it really helps me understand how far i have to go and what my next steps should be musically.. After reading this particular thread, I sat and thought long and hard about the direction I want to go musically.

2. How would you say a Producer( not a rapper/singer)format their c.d., would they use the same formula with the Chorus/Hook instrumental for 30 seconds? Or is it different because there is no rapper on it. I'm interested in knowing if producers should handle this differently.

on the real though, I just want to thank you guys for the insight on threads like these... overall it really helps me understand how far i have to go and what my next steps should be musically.. After reading this particular thread, I sat and thought long and hard about the direction I want to go musically.

1.
a) First, get the right demo and press kit set up. Be professional, think like a businessman. Have a social networking site that can social proof you in some fashion (have a couple hundred OR thousand listens). DO however practice your live shows at home or at parties. Do not spend money paying a fake promoter (there are many) to do a show. Learn stage presence by practicing your act over and over. In the event you have to do a showcase, you will know how to react. Throw a party and invite friends to see you.

b) Once an agent or manager accepts to represent you (they NEVER charge you for shit unless they're hustling you - they take a percentage of your gross receipt) - THEY have their social networks to help you get shows or get a deal of some fashion.

Don't "jump into the scene" without adequately assessing the battlefield and having the right soldiers and generals with you (agent and/or manager.)

2.
a) There are agents for producers too. Timbaland has an agent, Polow has an agent. They also have mangers. In your cover letter to each agent or manager, you will write that you want to be represented as a producer and you want to shop songs. The agent will read the solicitation and listen to the beats to see if they are worthy.

If they like your stuff, the agent can start you working with one of his other clients. He may even "package you" as part of a record deal for an artist. I don't know.

b) Producers generally have the beat and chorus (with hired studio-singer to perform if necessary.) It doesn't have to be long. Keep the snippets short. Make sure that they have a way of getting in touch with you or a way to listen to the full song w/o lyrics (so the artist can flow over it to get a "feel") on imeem or MySpace/Facebook or something.

The probability of getting a "producer's manager/agent" is generally lower than an artist because there are less revenue streams available to milk the client (an artist does shows, gets record deals, cuts deals with ghostwriters for credits, etc. You're competing with the million other people who own a computer and think they're a producer now just because they can cut samples or own a Motif synth.

Be professional - especially as a producer. It's all about business and giving them the hit song they want. Study other producers' and the melodies in their songs (they probably wrote them). Study song structure. Differentiate yourself.

Just get MOTIVATED and PROACTIVELY DO SOMETHING in 2009.

Oh shit, sorry for hi jacking your thread G!

Anyway, I've never really pursued that agent and etc lane. I was hit up once by Trey Songs manager. Last spring I think it was. He sent me out a contract to represent me on the production side of things. I didn't jump on it because I was trying to do the entire independent label thing. I didn't really feel he could do anything for me anyway. I may have been wrong but sometimes you have to go with your gut feelings.

If this next little venture I got jumping off in the New Year doesn't produce I think I may have to hit an entity up like that.

I think I'll be trying to do this music thing in some form or fashion until they plant me. May just not be in the lane that I'm in now. I love everything about the music and entertainment biz. So if it's not music it'll be something in entertainment that'll keep driving me. I like working with young people trying to do this so I'll find away to do it and profit from it I'm sure.

sun i aint even about to spar on no bullshit with you...im done....change starts now with me. But look I aint mad at you because I know how I can get sometimes. The story is I'm a war vet afflicted with PTSD. I developed Rage, Distrust, and every other thing negative on the battlefield. I live with trying to control these demons everyday and sometimes them shits come out when I interact with society...just some shit I gotta live with.
