Which guitar do you prefer to use when recording? I jam out with my fender strat, at the studio there is a gibson lesPaul i like to use, this guitar has great warmth. Fender is mad bluesy tho still.

It depends on the type of music.

If I want to record a heavy rock riff, I'll triple layer tracks with an ESP running EMG pickups (Kirk Hammett model) with a Mesa-Boogie Triple Rectifier (each layer at a different setting). I'll mid-range the eq and put the hurt when I record the complementary bass guitar to fatten that bitch up.

For hip-hop, it depends. What tone are you going for? Are we layering with multiple amps - like a Fender M-80, Marshall and a Soldano? What's your mic placement? What type of picks are you using (affects tone). Are you recording at half-speed and then speeding up the rhythm so it sounds crazy perfect?)

Man, this can get way too deep. Shoot...

Wutup God!? Glad to see u back mayne, always appreciate the intelligent responses from yer end...

Im pretty sure hes not referring to actual acoustic or electric recordings of real guitars though.....From what the rest of the thread indicates - it sounds more like hes relying on samples and keyboard playing...

Agreed - but he didn't really intimate that - though I should probably understand that from the general universe of posts in this specific production forum.

Hell - I guess tweak the guitar with an amp modeler plugin.

(Damn, I really wanted to get in a good recording discussion.)

Hell, i wish more threads actually touched this kind of knowledge....and had real in depth talk about shit like what kind of guitar, mic placement tricks, etc.. that people like to use rather then the typical "How do i make a beat?" thread! lol....

i gotta go with dreampolice on the PRS. Custom 24 all the way! theyve got a nice growl to em like you've got a live animal or somethin.
if i had to choose something a bit less expensive i'd prolly get me a fat strat w/ a coupla seymour duncan hot rails though

See STeez my threads arent always pointless.

Like i said i jam out with fender at my place. The studio i go to has fender, Gibson and i do prefer the fender, i find it better for rnb/hip hop its got that bluesy feel i like.

The type of guitar is usually the type of sound you want. I can't say I am specifically going to use a PRS when the track calls for a fuller sounding SRV pickup that just sounds better on a '68 Strat.

Obviously, not everyone has 25 guitars or 60 amps at their disposal for recording but layering the same guitar lines over each other with different amps - plus adding different FX or filters that "completes" the tone is great.

Yes, this is more of a Gearslutz discussion.
