u should b good to go running it thru ur mixer just boost on the high & mid frequencies to give the vocals some air and clarity as u mentioned u were trying to avoid a muddy sound.
Also mess around with the distance ur mouth is from the mic try n find a sweet spot that gives u the best signal, also hanging a quilt behind u when u record helps.
