The point about lame is the terms aren't his. They're based on one part of 50's success (his story) and Dr. Dre's endorsement. And Jean Grae will be just fine on the indie level, sleep if you want. Black Thought has made that mistake of being camera-shy...except for this album. He actually revealed some shocking parts about himself in the new URB magazine. A little late, but nevertheless...

as far as jean... im not slepin... she's the one crying about how she gets slept on. apparantly indie success isnt enough for her. that aint got a thing to do with anyone else "sleeping", she has shown that she isnt content to be succesful on that level. i dont sleep on her; i recognize her skills.

game is obviously doing it the way he sees fit, he went with the team that he fit with the best, how is it not on his terms? those arent "terms" those are called "circumstances"- you act like somehow he is being strong armed into rolling with g unit/shady/aftermath. like this isnt his choice... he rollin with a camp that has had a stranglehold on the industry for the last few years..... and somehow he doesnt want that? of course his affiliations play a major role.

We pay the cost by being subjected to the industry's "follow-the-leader" format and become inundated with game-alikes and tons of extra-violent rappers trying to outdo each other with over-the-top hood/war stories! The window for new artists shrinks even more, too.

All fair points. But, Thought DID open up a bit on "Water". Only one song, I know, but it's a start. I didn't know the brother's parents were killed when he was kid. Kinda explains the impersonal persona. Didn't know he reconneceted with family back in Soweto, either!

As far as lame goes...yeah, he made those choices. But, not all choices take their consequences into account. He chose to say he was shot in the heart. He chose to be on "Blind Date". He chose to have blond hair at one point, too. He also chose to be what I can only see as a pre-fabricated artist, and the fabrications are just too much for me to ignore. No, he's not the first or the last of these kinds of "artists", but his marketing plan is just too obvious. After a time, that can't be that good a look for the West Coast, especially after all this time. That's kind of my concern, just as a lover of Hip-Hop from every and any coast. THIS cat can't represent the future of a region whose realities have changed the landscape of this music forever. To be honest, I wouldn't have a problem AT ALL if the brother really brought something NEW to the table! That in and of itself would be him paying dues, because being original and true to a progressive ethic is one of the bravest stances to take in today's industry. In other words, Lame is taking no chances as a new West Coast artist. That may be asking a lot of anyone these days, but hope remains. I want to see the West back in the game, but in the same way they did so many years ago...blazing new trails.

personally, i think what the WEST needs a good, solid, NON-GANGSTA/SUPER UNDERGROUND BACKPACKER/PIMP artist to break.... becuase those three pretty much sums up what the west has had to offer and the west needs a REAL dude who isnt afraid to say "ok, i aint the hardest dude out, i aint gonna smack this bitch up, im not trying to explain astro physics, but i do got some other things to discuss if you're interested in a real person, not a persona of whats "real".

I totally feel you on that...which is why I WAS curious as to what would have Dre so damn excited. But, after the XXL story, what he revealed on his website (I never thought cats on the street grind had time to type on fan sites...not to stereotype...) I was just totally caught off-guard. I was checking for some really really new isht from this cat, something that would tell me--an East Coast cat with love for the West--that the West was about to take their thing in a bolder direction, maybe one with more thoughtful, even mature, undertones. NO, I didn't want astrophysics (I feel you on that, some of these underground cats...bleah), but damn man, there's got to be another perspective, another emotional level, to the street grind on the West Coast!

but i am not afraid to be wrong, and i will take responsibility for it when i am. and i think that is what hip hop- and the west, especially- needs. people need to hear about more than pimpin, flossing, banginn, or breakin. no one wants to talk aobut REAL THINGS.
