Fundamentals!

you wanna learn how to play guitar, may i then suggest that you start off with a (not so expensive) nylon acoustic (spanish). The strings are light, very helpful in the beginning. you dont have to press down all the strings as hard to play to be able to play a chord without loud buzzes and strings not being struck right. They have these verywhere , in any music store that sells some guitars or you can find em even secondhand in the papers. You will have a guitar you can start learning on for maybe less than 50 bucks (they have nice expensive spanish ones too, but why buy something expensive right away when you dont even know for sure if you are gonna stick to it).

You start off with a western acoustic (very hard strung tight metal strings) or electric (very thin wiry hard strung metal strings), the western will have imo a nicer sound than the spanish, but you will get frustrated easy because you have to push down on the strings mad hard. Most electric guitars also play lighter than western acoustics, some play very light, but the strings are thinner and also metal, so in both cases if you start off on metal strings and your fingertips aint used to playing guitar you prolly wont be able to play for very long before your fingers hurt too much.

Just some advice for anyone thinking of starting to learn guitar.

Ok I used to gig on a regular with Neo Soul and Gogo.....I have formal training, on sax& drums and about 2 years of keyboards...for like 10-12 years thru school....but let me tell you the most musical Keyboardists I know......play strictly by ear an they will run circles around a lot of the theory.....even though there is nothing wrong with theory but having a board and someone to teach you helps....or getting in a small band and playing backup to a really good board player will help you...but using your ear and a stack of good jazz or blues songs will start to help you

benny... maybe that is something that can help you further your career as a producer? or do you already know all of that stuff already?

yeah i was thinkin that when i signed up... but i think it seemed more performance oriented than composition oriented which is what i am interested in as a producer...

like we were learning the hand signs for conductors which is worthless to me, and we were also tapping out 4/4 beats which i feel like i already have a good grip on..

granted, it was only the first day, but i just think that i have learned so much in the past year since ive started fuckin around with beats that if i just continue making music, i will continue to learn new things...

Something I like about makin beats is that you got all the time in the world to come up with the sound you want... it aint like i'm sittin at a piano in front of a 5,000 people or some shit and i gotta be able to bang out all sorts of different chords without missin a note...

I just felt that this class would be a waste of my time and credits...

Instead I switched into an asian philosophy course studying hinduism, confucianism and buddhism... philosophy is the dopest subject... everything you learn you can relate to your own life... for me, and im sure alot of ya'll, realizing connections and relationships between things gives me a rush of energy... something which is crucial for making dope beats...

Deuce - I just started at Binghamton University (State University of New York)... Its a tight school... I just transferred here to start my sophmore year...

Yo Om - Im sure if u really do yer thing thats all u need, i personally think u can teach yerself virtually anything if u have good enough information in front of u...

Hopps - You crack me up dog!...lol....Yo i didnt kno u learned piano back in tha day!?...Thats cool man...I kno how u feel about those kinda exercises tho...for reals....When i took guitar it was tha same dam thing, trust me...we did exercises to strengthin yer fingering jus like that....i hated that shit too and honestly became uninspired by that shit, especially at such a young age...I mean cummon!, All u wanna do when yer that young is rock out playing tha tune to yer favorite band intead of doin fingerin shit!!...lol.....I do think that shit helps, but im also more into having fun then teaching myself to have fun!?..haha....i kno how it goes tho.

D - "but let me tell you the most musical Keyboardists I know......play strictly by ear an they will run circles around a lot of the theory.....even though there is nothing wrong with theory but having a board and someone to teach you helps"

Word up man. See thats basically how i see it too, but i gotta jump through some hoops to get where im want to be i guess...It doesnt bother me much tho, considering i already basically kno this shit jus from personal experimentation and learning on my own from jus playing around.

Benny - thats tight man, good luck!

you man i been googlin' myself, and have read that hanon execrises are pretty much wack. especially for beginners, you can fuck up your fingers and tendons for real if you do it wrong/too much. besides, finger strength exercises are good, but how are you ever gonna learn to play pinao by doing little finger exercises all day. just look up some basic finger techniques for scales (couldnt find too much hanon exercises) and practice those, and you will be fine. nomore than 10 minutes or 15 minutes a day are needed. and besides that, hanon aint all there is either. there are tons and tons of finger strength training exercises out there, even from classical composers like chopin.

to each his own. As a classical piast myself hannon has worked fine. There are always gonna be more then one way to skin a cat. But i gurantee that hannon wont mess up your fingers.

Basically u cant go by what other people say on the net. You acutally have to sit down practie and try techniques out for yourself
