It will be fun.

As part of my audio engineering course at SAE collage I have to write a 1,500 word essay on any topic of my choice, which relates to subject matter included in the course. Of course, it will be posted for you all when its done. I havn't decided what I will write on but have a few ideas. Recently we had lectures on record companies and contracts. After realising how badly artists (the core of music itself) get fucked on the regular, I've found it attractive to look for loopholes, so to speak, in this rediculousness.

Now, this post may look like it is going to belong in the Illmuzik Industry Talk Forum but wait, there's more.

Obviously we are encouraged to choose an essay topic, which caters to our interests and would benifit our goals. Thats the main reason why I am leaning towards the finding of loopholes. I'm an artist and I'd like to make a living from having my art distributed far and wide. So, as you see, it was the logical topic idea to have. I imagine this is a common goal around here, which brings me to my question...

If you were in my position and had to write an essay on any topic (not too broad) relating to music, which would you choose? What would you research in order to attain your goals or inform yourself of something you are interested to know more about? Essentially, I suppose it's asking: where do you want to be?

Hey,

Good Luck! :thumb:

I'd probably choose one of the following topics:

A. I'd explore how the music industry kills individual creativity and artistic bloom.
B. I would examine the first independent voices in music's history (for instance: the first musicians to open their own indie labels etc').
C. Rebellion against musical conformity.

These are just rough ideas to get ya goin'... Maybe you'd like to use one of these ideas in your essay...
This essay is the perfect opportunity to shine, so c'mon, show 'em what ya got! ;)

I would talk about how the business model has changed, and how the "single" is coming back into existance alongside how the radio is "cross-formatting" every genre into formats where certain genres dont even belong in that format just becuase those songs are currently in the top 40 and they make cake, so now when u got a rock station the piece a shit plays all the "pop tunes" and even hiphop in the process....So what happened to the formats???

That topic right there could be argued easily into a essay of the length you have to write.

I'd do it on how mainstream hiphop is influencing the image of hiphop in general, making people believe it's only about G G G G -Unit, being a gangster, wearing expensive designer clothes and bling. That the media is relating it to crime, hoes and drugs. And how most of the new generation of rappers are also influenced by the mainstream and have no message to bring to the people. That hiphop is not what it was about...
