Hey bro i usually use garriton orchestra for all my ethnic strings but before that I used syntheway strings which are only $35 online and you can get a pretty good indian string bend with the portamento on it. As for alot of other ethnic instruments, most are plucked or struck so soundfonts work great for them. Sometimes you really have to eq the fuck out of the soundfont though to make it sound good. I just use a standard FL soundfont player that has a filter on it so you can also manipulate the attack and release of the soundfont. www.sf2midi.com has some really great sounding fonts. They have alot of ethnic instruments i have aquired that sound crispy such as flutes, kotos, sitars, tamburas, tablas, harps, ect..

I know about how shitty those ethnic sampletank sounds are too. The tambura was the only thing i used out of like 50 instruments.. lol
