I've got an ASR, and I've tried various pieces of software over the years. I just could never get comfortable with software platforms. I realize the potential is greater as you have more options, but I could never get that same feeling that I do with my ASR. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I just love my ASR and have had tons of fun makin tracks these past 7 years.

Thanx God, as much i appreciate all the advice you have given on this board, i read almost all the things you posted. I worked with software bout 3 years and the sounds are not quite as lively as they are from the ASR, you have to put tons of more effort in getting the sound right with software, as with hardware it just bangs straight from the box ( i'm lazy i know.. )

Plus i'm a handson guy, i don't like chopping samples clicking the mouse, and the way you can chop them on the ASR i think is amazing..

I worked with Ableton Live ( which is great and i still use on a regular base ), Cubase SX3 and FL Studio.. But still think that the limitations of hardware put me to the test, as then it's all bout creating and not bout doing all sorts of things, i'm easily distracted.. Plus I still think the sound from an ASR 10 is way better than any software.. And I know that some guys do amazing things with software, it's possible, you got more flexibility.. But i'm behind a computer at work all day.. I want to creep behind the machine and actually feel like i'm making music!!

I got a nice soundcard, Emu 1820M and i just track out the MP and the ASR and add from there, i arrange in software, make adjustments and that's how i've been doing it, i'm thinking bout using the MPC in MIDI thru so you can really combine software and hardware to the fullest..

Just my 2 cents, please leave a reply, i always love to hear your opinion..

Here's my 2 cents:

1. MIDI-link your MPC with your software sequencer. You are doing yourself a detriment by not controlling it from your computer.

2. If you like the ASR10 and want to use it more power to you.

3. I could get similar ASR10 sounds if I sit and fuck with the filters on any popular subtractive synth (Triton) or an additive synth (NI Reaktor).

4. I could get/buy the sample library for the ASR10 because I like the "sounds" port it into my sample library and use the money spent on the ASR10 to strategically upgrade my hardware.

5. You seem to know your stuff, why not learn about making sounds with the synth rather than relying on an expensive sample library (the ASR10) for the "right sounds." You become an inherently more powerful producer this way. Sit down with a Triton and read how do change the filters, alter the attack, cutoff, eq, LFO, etc. the sound.

Anyway, I gotta run, I would've written more.

I'm not sitting on the ASR 10 like a sample library, but i like working with this one.. I'm gonna try to control it from my PC..

but i use the ASR because of the AD/DA converters it has, it gives any sound put in a distinctively rich sound, probably a MOTIF or a TRITON could do this too, but i don't own one.. so.. i stick with what i have..

I can buy motif sample cd's and convert them to Ensoniq format and load them in to the ASR, and work from there and tweak those sounds to make more sounds.. I'ma try and do that..

but i'm mostly a sample based producer and the ASR is a pretty damn good sampler.. So i'm trying to get that, and when i get new sounds just load them in to the ASR and start running..

For intance, i could put the entire Colussus sound library in my ASR and run with it from there.. I use VST's too.. but for all my sample based production i stick to ASR 10 and MPC, + Ableton Live 7.

Thanks for the informative post, i'll keep you guys posted bout my workflow with the ASR

Word! I like cats that appreciate the difference in converters. If you're really down with that, you should try throwing some money into converters that "color" your sound. There are cats that use low end and high end converters to "color" the sound of their synths (and samplers too!).

Going from a Swissonic to a lower end converter-- you can hear the difference-- and that's something a lot of electro cats fuck with.

Good luck man!

^^^^Good advice God. I'm more like Lazy Eyes, I've got to "feel" that junk with my hands ya' know? I want to get into the software sequencing and see if that would give me an advantage or not. For me, If I can't work with it or it does not fit my workflow, I can't fool with it. Everyone is different. Could you enlighten me on the Swissonic ?
