Electro-Harmonix New Sensor 12AX7 Mullard Tubes - Anybody tried these yet???

So i apparently had a credit with Sweetwater that i wasnt aware of which was a nice surprise so i finally copped some new tubes for my ART MPA Pre....

I was actually on the waiting list for mad long to get the Groove Tube version of the Mullards but GT ended up stopping production on those tubes or some shit, so once i found out i had a credit waiting for me, i just copped the EH's instead...

I figure they'll still give a nice coloring in comparison to the cheap chinese tubes that come stock in the MPA....

Just was wondering tho if anybody else has fucked with these tubes yet and had anything good to say about them tho?

ya man, they rock! As far as 12AX7's go its about your only choice. Groove tubes got bought out by Fender and then told us they would keep making them but Fender kept pushing the ETA back until they finally came clean and told us they where discontinued.

Yeah ive had the chat like a billion times with my sales agent and just gave in finally since im tired of waiting....
They gotta be better then the stock tubes hands down tho so im looking forward to popping them in.

Def was surprised to hear i only had to pay a difference of 5 bucks since i had a credit laying around! :)

Right on, you know i hadnt thought about swapping the op-amps out for different ones....I dont know if i wanna bother tho....Well see i guess. I still need to put in the new tubes...To be honest tho, the performance for the price point i live in right now just from the stock guts in the MPA arent bad at all, but obviously im always striving to get it to sound as a little better if possible.

I read through that thread and didnt see any real evidence that the op amp swaps will make a difference though...Plus i would need a dedicated diagram with specific instructions on how to do something like that which i didnt see anywhere as well...I just skimmed the thread tho.

i totally understand, beside from the cabinets we have other tube stuff like akg solidtubes..eh, its just plain magic once you put in one of these. We also have a dbx566, put a telefunken in there...its better but still sheit imo (ii love my 166xl). We've hired a lot of stuff, nice but never suiting in the way that we'd purchase it except for the old focusrite stuff (isa) which is just very nice but considering that we dont invest that much into gear we'd wait off till the time was right. We actually wennt balistic over pre-amps after having all the good stuff rented...we made our own highly discrete pre amp, which has started beginning this year after buying some very nice vintage siemens pre amps/comp-limiters. My friend's dad at the studio is a prof in mathematics and a audiophile (this dude build an analogue oversamper in his cd-players, consisting out of tubes lol) and of course, is our secret weapon hehe. We buy mogami cables, read the specs, he measures with cold and notes that their specs dont match our measuring results. So after my boy bought the siemens pre's i kicked him and said "dude, i got you those on blueprint 3 years ago" like wtf pointing out to his dad. In reply, they overhauled the siemens and changed the powersupply. You'd think considering this is high end, it to be expensive but its pretty much half to any super modded 1073's you find. From there ive thrown in some schematics of vintage stuff and discussed features, i wont go into much detail as we plan on selling these babies but i can ensure that even the sm58 sounds rediculously sweet hehe but also this genius ran into some stupid issues that were never even fixed from original neve designs and also some features that arent even found on any high end pre to this date (wennt around redesigning phantom power) but i can tell you one big important feature, something which makes this unit completly versatile and that is the fact that it uses multiple transformers (the best you can find) which are selectable to adapt to pretty much all microphones. Ive come to conclusion that all these mic+pre combo's are bs, like a sony+teletronix is alway the way to go etc...bs and very annoying for you budget unless you're running a million buck studio and can afford to buy into all the typical "supposed to be" mic chains.

So most likely, modding really makes a difference but it can be hard to point out the changes as some things are really due to cirquitry design and possible interference making the gainstage more over class a/b than a class a(not to mention monitoring situation). So, if you dare, try one of the tab, siemens or old telefunken pre's, there are lots of mod and diy pages for these pre-amps and they do not compare to all bs gear that out right now.

I got this from audio pro on your mpa which sounds very interesting, besides, the dude does more than replace capacitors.

hehe, i'll let you know when were done its gonna be expensive but not in the way you'd pay for a manley these days. I think it would be fun to get a friend up in the studio and spit some through the sm58 and let other decide what mic+pre we used hehehe

Soooo....

The Tube exchange was relatively much easier then I thought it would be, it was actually pretty cool to take the unit apart and see how it was all interconnected....
The tubes are actually alot smaller then i expected them to be, i thought they were much larger for some reason like the ones I used to have in my trainer amp that i played a strat through when i was a teenager but heir only like an inch and a 1/2 long with a diameter of about an 2/3 of an inch, not very big really.....

So anyway, i swapped them out lastnight, waited till the wife left for work to make some noise and conducted the first test this morning....

After calibrating the meter trims and getting everything correct again on the VUs i plugged in my faithful GT MD1BFET and tried both normal and high plate settings while running through different impedance values.....

I found that the new Mullard emulations gave me a few extra db of gain and were also a bit quitter then the chinese 12ax7b's with a slightly more intimate in your face tone.....

It def wasnt a drastic change like Form was mentioning earlier but for a small amount of coin it was def worth the upgrade, plus it was fun making the swap myself.

hard to tell man hehe, i just go by reference and experience we had with the solidtubes mics and they were pretty good already but now it has more air, very nice in highs and added some more coziness (warmth) but still tight, there's no oversaturation anything and just perfect noisefloor. But i'll check with the new pre amp, we also use a switchboard for tubes to hear comparison because that is what the pre amp should be about, to choose from the best components (tubes/transformers), pre and post stages and even passive usage we're possible (and/or tube bypass). When we're done I should be able to make some recordings in which i can record the differences in all those settings. But as far as i can tell, if you can get your hands on NOS Telefunken tubes with low specs

ECC83 is the euro name for 12AX7, the model is the telefunken smoothplate or the type "s".

Be sure to buy the right ones, as the article will also explain, a lot has been produced by a different manufacturer but is still labelled as Telefunken, while its Mullard. Not meaning this in regards to character of the tube but prices you pay on the net. These tubes are rare and will become more expensive in the years to come so its never bad to buy matched sets, we're definitly stocking them hehehe

it is but there are various ways, like these real Telefunken 12ax7 wont have the wearing on the label which of course, if it would happen to a tube, would wear the label. I cant be to sure about their durability but i'll ask in regards to the ECC83, i mean, these tubes origin from begin 50's so i havent been around long enough to have that experience lol. What i do know is that the good tubes last longer, like the Telefunken/Siemens but also some other which become labelled as military grade tubes.
