got my hands on a book about misconceptions in nutrition sciences recently.
the message is pretty stunning, ill just summarize a few of the more interesting points for you;

- salt is not unhealthy, in fact it is needed by the kidneys to process and excrete water. there is no clinical study to prove salt being accountable for any coronary diseases. avoiding salt will result in boring food only.
- raw vegetables are not healthy. they take twice as much energy to be digested and turning to raw food only will ultimately lead to an off balance gastrointestinal tract.
- "5-a-day" prevents nothing, except for empty cash registers in the supermarkets
- they re-did the "super size me" experiment at a swedish university. 20 students participated in the test, and NONE of them gained as much weight as the guy from the movie, nor were their cholesterol levels gained significantly. they say you would have to cheat with anabolics to gain as much as 400 gramm a day, otherwise its simply not possible.
- fast food is not unhealthy, as long as theres everything in it your body needs to function properly. fries and a burger will not do it, but add some vegetables and your good. make variations in your meals
- sweeteners do not help with diets. in fact they make the pancreas produce insulin, because it thinks there will be sugar to process. as there is none you get hungry.
- diets are useless anyway. as long as overweight is not a psychological problem, your body just accomodates as much fat as it feels is needed. any attempt to lower that natural balance will result in a jo-jo effect, because your system is scared to loose its reserves

...and so on

it comes down to that there is no proven connection between "healthy" food and a long, healthy life. good food can not be measured by its nutrient content, but only by its digestibility. if you like eating fresh and your stomach has no problem with it, go with salad, stay with potatoes and beef otherwise. just do not eat to much.

From what I've learned over the years, the best thing is to just have what you want but use common sense. Oh ya, and exercise! As long as you're doing some sort of activity (watching TV doesn't count) then you'll be fine. There's also nothing wrong with eating really "clean" and working out like crazy, because it does benefit you more in the long run rather than eating McD's and lying around all day.

So just use your head, stay active, and don't worry about every little thing you hear/see on the news. Most of it is bullshit anyway.

This is all half-truths and misinformation:
- salt is fine in moderation, in excess it is toxic (i.e. hypertension / fluid retention / death / etc)

- raw vegetables may not have as many available nutrients as steamed vegetables, however they are healthy as all fuck. To make a blanket statemet that "raw vegetables are not healthy" is like saying oxygen is not healthy. To this statement, I say "put down the crack pipe".

- I don't know what 5 a day is

- slightly overweight people definitely have a higher chance of heart attack, their heart needs to push more blood and work harder to keep the person alive. I call bullshit on that one.

- I doubt Swedish McDonald's has all of the same artificial, chemically manufactured additives as American McDonald's. America is the king of high fructose corn syrup, it's in everything we eat (if you don't know any better to do something about it).

- fast food is not necessarily unhealthy (if you mix it up with some vegetables as you say), however it's a quick fix. As listed above, all fast food is loaded with corn syrup, it's good for some quick energy (like white bread), however you'll feel hungry again quickly as your body burns it off so fast. Whole grains are much better than refined (such as whole wheat bread).

- diets: I agree, diets on their own are not very effective, I'd put much more importance on physical activity (i.e. exercise). One note though - as you get older, you realize the effect that different foods have on your body (i.e. you are what you eat). I personally stay away from some foods because I know the long term effects will be negative.

No disrespect Mono, but I had to comment on this.

surely any such information has to be handled with care, and saying salt is not unhealthy does not mean you should eat every meal with a pound of it. as well as my post was not ment as a cart blanche for eating fat and burgers all day.
its just interesting to experience when certain public (or even industry) made hysteria like the whole health mania is actually based on no relevant research at all. and i agree, eating food with chemical additives cannot be good by definition, i guess thats what fade meant by common sense and use your head.

5-a-day is a marketing trend, from great britain i think, it suggests you to eat five different colors of fruits/vegetables a day, because you will die a slow painful death otherwise.

the thing with raw vegetables is that it takes the body much more energy to heat them up to a processing temperature. Sometimes this leads to undigestet nutritional components, which can harm the intestinal mucosa (im not a medical student, just citing the book:). a damage of that part of the immune system can lead to rheumatic trouble. so that point is rather to be understood as a cue to not exaggerate the raw vegetables idea.

youre right, im sorry, i misinterpreted this one. what was actually said was different, but nontheless astonishing. there was a study of 1700 patients with coronal diseases. three years after therapy 10 percent of patients with normal weight were dead. 7 percent of slightly overweight and only 3 percent of the clearly overweight ones.

how could this be...they think that people with overweight have more risk factors to decrease and more reserves to live from after having problems with coronal diseases. so the consequence is that its wrong to tell people with such diseases to loose weight and that it is harder to find the cause of it for the normal weight patients.

but overweight is a risk factor

Same here, I'm a big fan of these open forums, it definitely provides a lot of good information I may not get otherwise.

I'm definitely a skeptic, very critical of what the media tells people. Someone here has mentioned before that you need to be careful of "studies" since many times they're funded by parties that have a direct interest. For instance, I wouldn't be surprised if this food study was indirectly financed and prodcued by the fast food or meat industry, it seems a bit suspect.

Just as I get leery of approval of lackadaisacal attitudes towards various issues, I also get alarmed when I see people thinking that healthy eating is bullshit propoganda. Especially since the fast food companies spend so many billions on marketing, that's the real propaganda IMO.

Beyond that, you're right, moderation is king. A little bit of everything in moderate doses will take you a long way...
