Metalica sued one of the download engines for making their music available for free. i think this is a bit harsh cos Metalica are livin large and would only be losing a small portion of what they aready have a shitload of.

and

ive read lots of interviews, for example Murs, where the artist says "i dont mind if people download my music as long as they dig it"

my question

if you were putting out music, how would you feel about people downloading your work for free?

would it depend on how much money you were making?

what other things would come into concideration?

i think as long as it wasnt harming my income too badly, id be chill with people downloading my stuff.

how bout the rest of yas?

It's such a tough debate! I think I'd be ok with people d/l my songs (as long as it's not too many) because I know the real heads out there will actually go out and buy the CD and support me. But you also have to take into consideration if the artist is on a major label, or is just releasing their own stuff independently.

Bottom line: if your music is REALLY good, people will buy it. But if you have 18 songs (today's standard!) and only 3 are dope, then don't expect that many sales.

Wrong man, These are people lives and hard work. IF you work 40 hours at your job and get your check and their is a deduction to some bs , you''ll be mad. Its the same thing. At least wait till it been out a year or so. The labels are screwing them already.

It affects independant artist more, but its just like promotion in my eyes. What if your out there promoting an album giving away CD samplers? Its almost the samething. People that like your music and are true fans will go and buy your music/support you. I also feel it puts more pressure on artist to make better CD's because half the reason people download songs is they don't want to spend $16 for a CD that sucks and only has one or two good songs on there. Artist really make most of there money on shows and publishing, not record sales.

I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with downloading songs from major artists from the major labels. In the UK cd's are way over priced, and not enough quality tracks are put on one album. So wheres the encouragement to buy that album?

If i download several songs of a particular album and like it i will go out and buy it. When it comes to independent labels most of the time i can't find their mp3's on kazza, but apart from that i believe in supporting the artists and labels who are out there to make good music not large profits

Hey,

The label I used to be on a few years ago went bankrupt because the dj's who were its main source of income for buying vinyls stopped buying them because they could download them off the net, burn them to cd, and play them in the clubs with cd turntables.

The difference between a label giving away promos and someone ripping a track and posting it on the net is that the label CHOOSES to give away the promos; they are not choosing to have some kid rip and post.

Yeah, artists get 'screwed' by the labels; this is relative because they still make some decent money, but in comparison to how much everyone else makes, it's not that much.

Uh, if the price drops, you guys are REALLY going to buy albums? Sure you are...you can already buy music second-hand, why not do that?

I'll bet that people here would be screaming bloody murder if some kids were ripping and posting their tracks; now it's easy to say 'no, I'd be cool with it' because they don't make a living off it, but as soon as they see the profits slip away, they all of a sudden get on a soap box and yell about how they're 'not getting theirs'.

As for me, I don't make music for money, so at the moment I don't care if my stuff gets posted or not. Not like anyone would download it, though....

I think it is wrong....but as someone said the label is already screwing th artists...biiigtime.....but do you think that just as Bush has a tax cut to make corporations richer to hire more people...that won't happen they keep the extra money.....just like if the labels get more money from people stopping the downloading of mp3's......hell I think the way they should settle this is someone that lives close to a radio station that has good reception or cable or satellite radio go and make a shitload of cd's offf of the recordings and give them away.....my point in that is that they say the music is cd quality.....the internet isn't only way to get cd quality songs for free but the quickest and largest selection, back in the day that's what tape recorder was for..LOL..........what would the asshol--s at RIAA do then.....plus that would be a good defense strategy......fuggin greed what can you say....
