I'm blessed....

My wife if a Manager at a local Hospital. She has a Bachelors Degree in Nursing (Registered Nurse). She makes 83G a year.

So we don't get killed at tax time I own and run a Auto Detail business which caters exclusively to the Hospital that she works at. I can easily bring in $800 weekly depending on the detail service required. Notice I said "auto detailing"....anybody can wash a car we detail them joints down to the cracks and crevices! I only work 3 to four days a week. At the Hospital there's always a lot full of cars so it's money in the bank. I'm about to get into to scrap metal and wiring. Believe it or not that shit brings big money...especially copper. I've been self employed since 96'. Nothing beats being in business for yourself and having my wife as a partner allows her to get back any and everything they take out of her hospital check in taxes.

When my wife takes her 4 week vacation every year I'm always free to do what ever. I don't punch a clock and I answer to nobody but me. I let my nephews handle the business when I don't feel like working. I almost always take the whole summer off and let my oldest Nephew run shit so I can chill. I usually take it over in the fall and winter months when it's not so hot.

I get payed to create pretty pictures.

I yearn for the day when i can fully support myself by producing records. But there has got to be a job out there that isnt boring repetitive and shitty. Is anybody seriously cool with their job? .. does anybody love what they do for a living? let me know cuz i need to find something i can get into, give me some ideas.

I'm a graphic designer for Young & Rubicam SA an AD agency, work is like being at home. I totally love my job, cause I get to have fun everyday. Plus my music can get the chance to be used in ads.

I can't say that I like my job. I work with kindergarten teachers and students and believe me, it's exhausting!! These kids (babies) know waaaaaaay too much for their ages and they know very little (or less) of what they should know. Many of them deal with too much drama that they bring to school with them. Nah...not feeling this job at all. My dream is to produce full time and let me add successful. That makes a big difference on whether or not I can feed my family on a regular basis.

Irony of Ironies, thats what Step does too!

thats crazy cuz i have a bachelors degree in communications but i was actually thinking about going back to school to get an associates or even a second bachelors in web and graphic design .. how funny is that ... i have alot of ideas about the web but i have no knowledge of html or design or photoshop or database or flash or anything... i need to get into business for myself .. being an employee is like being a prisoner.. im locked in my office 9+ hours a day making money for other people while im just barely getting by with my mediocre middle class ass. This bullshit needs to change. QUICK. the worst part about it is that im a smart dude. Its like im only using 10% of my brain when im at my job. I dont even feel fuffilled or accomplished in any way doing this bullshit.

I work as a Operations/CSR for a Wholesale Tire Company. We are owned by Michelin. The money is ok, but it could always be better. Especially with two kids, money can get scarce. I feel ur pain though Ash. I wish i would of went into the School of Business at SUNY n did like Accouting or some shit in Computers which was my original major. I took advantage of the "#1 Party School" slogan and made sure it stayed like that. Sometimes I kick myself in the ass but I always seem to learn the hard way. Anywayz, the future is looking ok. Hopefully jus tryin to make cake off this music shit.
Shit when i graduated from college, i was making 7.60 at a Bank as teller, like what the FUCK!!! Seeing cats cash in $1,000 dollar checks wasnt fun. Im in the right path now, jus gota pay my dues.

What ever you decide to do make sure it's geared toward being your own boss. I got my hustle on and put my wife through school in a career that she was guaranteed to make big bucks doing. It took awhile to pay off but it's cool now. We're not rich by no means but we don't live check to check like we use to. If you're married it's alot easier for one or the other to take a risk at being self employed if the other can foot the bill! And don't live beyond your means...that's key.

I do freelance website developing.

I love what I do, and that's what's most important to me right now. Sometimes the money's not great, but other times I do pretty well. That's the downside about working freelance - sometimes the money is there, other times not.

Sometimes I wonder if I should work for a company doing this, and the only motivation behind that is job security. Guaranteed I'll be getting a paycheck every 2 weeks. But on the other hand, I could easily lose my job if the company was losing money and laying people off, for example.

By doing freelance, like I said the money's not always there, but at least I'm able to set my own rules.

Since I've been working freelance the last while, at this point I can't see myself really enjoying working for a company. I've come to really enjoy what I do and having all the freedom in the world to do it. For example, I'm used to creating websites from start to finish, working with the client the whole way and helping them go in the right direction with their organization. I went for an interview last year for a company and they asked me if I would be able to work with a team in developing sites. That's when I realized what I was getting into. With a company I'd have to take a backseat and do what I'm asked to do, plain and simple. With freelance, it's all on me, which is what I enjoy.

My advice to Ash: it seems like you're dead set on working for yourself. I say go for it. But don't do it because you're angry with your current job, do it because you want something better for yourself. If you do your own thing, you won't see lots of money for a while and you have to deal with that. If you want to work for yourself and make big bucks, well then you're going to have to wait a while.

After college, I made a living DJing in clubs and making beats. No security, plus unhealthy life (I definitely had no discipline at that point in my life). After that I spent three years in banking (boring).
Since then, I've spent the last ten years in the Wine & Spirits industry. First I did sales and operations on the manufatuing side, now Im working with a logistics company and focusing on the shipping side. My job is like that board game Risk, except instead of plastic pieces, I'm moving 40' containers of Wine and Spirits all over the World. I've been to France and San Francisco on business, and got my own office in the Empire State Building. People trust me with shipping some of the best wine in the world, and I have a good name in the business from coming through for people over and over again.
I put a lot of pride and eneergy into my day job, and I put a lot of emotion and professionalism into my music (even though it's just a hobby right now). You gotta diversify, do your best with what you got, and see how things pan out. That's my deal right now.
Most importantly, i got a roof over my head, food on my table, and my family is healthy. I'm working with good people at the day job, and the music projects I'm working on are a labor of love, good music with good people. I'm gonna stay positive, just keep doing the right thing and god willing good things will happen.

In closing - Wine and Spirits is a decent racket to get by with, it's basically recession proof (people drink when the economy is good and bad). It's also music friendly, music and drinking go hand in hand. Check out distributors, freight forwarding, customs brokerage, manufacturers, etc, good industry IMHO.

I just started at Progressive auto insurance as a claims adjuster. job seems pretty cool to me. they're hiring like crazy too. and they actually encourage movement and promotion. my branch manager has been there only 3 years....no drug test either. Unfortunately I didn't know that for the 3 months prior to me getting hired but what are you gonna do. No experience needed. They send you to training. Right now I'm in Arizona....put us up in nice tellys too.
