I mean, do you tell people that you are trying to be a Hip-Hop producer/ make beats? What are some of the responses you get?? I don't tell people cuz I don't think they understand what the concept is all about...because I assume that most just listen to the radio and doesn't really listen to actual music behind it. So it would be kind of useless anyways.

Yea, i just kinda say im into music production. It takes too long to explain to every person that asks.

I usually say im tryin to do jazz cuz its too hard to explain to most people how hip-hop production works with the drummachine inbstead of live musicians.

its actually not useless at all to tell people that you produce, cuz actually a few weeks ago I was having a conversation with this guy I barely even knew and he isn't even interested in musical production and I let him know that i make hip hop beats and he was like Oh really my dad owns a studio u should come by and check it out and boom the next week i got a couple hours of free studio time in a proffesional studio just cuz I told him i make beats. You never know who you might be talking to, one day u might be talkin to someone who can hook u up with some connections, I even go as far as to carry a case of 5 of my cds in my back pack every where i go just incase I meet that specail someone ... its all about networking

Yeah..I think that's the problem...explaining to people how you do it and what you do.

Danm man, I feel you on that one! Lol must be a pain that your girl dont like what you do....

I say it to everyone, but actually, since I'm not only a beatmaker, and not MAINLY a beatmaker, that's not the 1st thing I say to people...

I'm a teacher-to-be, a drummer, AND a beatmaker..... but if I see it fit, of course, I'll say it, and I dont mind explaining (I'm a teacher... that's what I do), cuz, as a lot of others said, It can lead to networking and visibility...

This is a good topic,,,

I tell alot of people. All my people know what I do. The funny thing is when they also hear I rhyme, and I have songs out and done,,,they look skeptical. I mean back before Eminem it was fresh because cats were respectin it. But if its someone I dont know they look at me like I just saw 8-Mile and wanna be down,,lol. Then i let them hear my music and the it speaks for itself. BUT, at work,,,people only know that I am into production,,,,I work in North Jersey and thats where the hicks are. I would never hear the end of it if I told them I rap too,,,lol. They on that classic rock shit,,,which is mostly good music, but some of those cats are reeeaaal ignorant,,,,thats why I am in charge of the 3 worst counties in North Jersey,,,Union, Essex, and Hudson. Those cats are scared to come down to those areas and I live in Union. But back to the topic,,,,I am proud of what I do,,,and I always got a CD of me and the cats I collabbed wit,,,,I gotta spread the TRUTH,,1

i have the exact same experiences. i jus dnt bother most of the time. but wen i do meet sum1 who "knows" its like fire then i jus start vibing and stuff. it is hard to explain to people who are so locked into the mainstream scene what you do.

Hey thats a cool thread. I usually dont tell people that i make beats because it can get ugly. They want to come over to see how i work, they want to hear my stuff on a cd, they want to know how much i sell my stuff... it is annoying, because it is not my calling. I dont sell my soul especially to Emcee that want to spit nasty words on it.

I dont mind talking to people who dosent have any interrest in music, cause that way i'm safe (lol) and they will encourage me still. But what i love the most, is to talk about production to my musician friends who share their passion and music to God. In God they are a good source of motivator to me.

Indeed, you never know to WHO you're talking to until you realized that in the end, you've been blessed. I've been. And this is what i call MAGIC!!!!

Its all about jus being proud of who u are and respecting you talents.....When u feel that way, and u arent afraid to show it (not boasting or bragging, just being confortable with who u are and what ur about)....thats all u really need and then cats will pay closer attention...Its all in the way u pitch yerself man.....seriously.....trust me, when it comes to pitching yerself, this is where ur just like a bizness man, and u have to act like one, the more u act about urs and the more u portray a professional attitiude about what u do - the more people listen and take u seriously.....Think about it - when u go to cop a new appliance or whatever, u got that one salesman that doesnt bug u, but definitly knows his shit - so when u ask a question, he replies with a clear, yet fully aware answer of what u wanted to kno and maybe even more info then u expected.....its the same thing man.....u just gotta be about ur business...

Well usually I'm not telling to anyone unless I'm drunk or I'm talking to the musician...
I hate explaining exactly what I do, and then they just ask what else do you do! =)
Especially my relatives do not know a thing about this and they won't before I'm famous! =) Nice to surprize them... haha.
