Do I Need a Interface to Run Reason on my Macbook Pro?

Not trying to be rude Doc but I actually talk to the top people at both Propellerheads and Line 6 every couple of months.

You're not being rude I'm still learning myself about all this stuff anybody that says they know everything about recording and gear is full of shit.

So how exactly do you get more functionality with the Line 6 interface and not the plug-ins? Is it because the interface has amp modeling on the interface itself? (I'm completely clueless when it comes to Line 6 gear.)

I don't find rewire being a pain in the ass at all, I just set up a session and then save it as a template in Pro Tools and away I go. Of course that is me though.

And I wouldn't jump into Pro Tools right now. I would wait to see what is going to come out next, they just dropped the MBox 1 from being supported and there are rumors floating around that they have some huge things on the horizon. Now exactly how "huge" those things are I'm not sure. I do know if they don't ease up the limitations of LE they are going to get left in the dust, hopefully they will just come out with one software version that works with both M-Audio interfaces and their proprietary stuff oh add automatic delay compensation and make it 64 bit and they will be back on top.

Oh yea one more question @ thedreampolice, is their any word on Reason 5 that you can talk about like possible release date or more instruments being added? If you can't talk about I understand, but it would be cool to know.

its all good man :) Digi just put out PT8 not long ago, and I can tell you for sure nothing new for the rest of the year. Maybe something from AIR but I doubt that. They just put out Eleven Rack and that was a huge release for them. It is also very cool, there are a few preset that I made on it!

Digidesign still controls way over 90% of the market and I don't see that changing.

As far as Record goes you only get a few POD amp models out of the box, when you use it with a Line6 interface it goes up to like 40 or something so it really brings the functionality way up on that Record device. It also opens up all the POD reverbs and things. Very cool stuff.

I have been trying to break in to Reason inner circle for a while and no go, I know nothing about Reason 5. But they always do something cool!

Rewire drives me buts because I have to keep track of two files not just one and I have about 200 Reason songs in progress right now. If I rewired that would take the number up to 400+ files ahhhhhhhhhh

As far as Digi goes I was thinking more along the time span of next year, because as you said the Eleven Rack just came out, but PT 8 has been out since 2008 so I'm think around September of 10 we should see something. They do own a huge market share in the major studio market, but major studios are on the brink, and with the economy I don't see, but a few making it out of this.

If Digi wants to stay relevant they are going to have to start catering to the Home and Project Studio market more than they are now. I'm not saying it is going to happen over night, but over the course of the next decade if they don't start giving the Home and Project Studio's what they want they are just going to jump over to Cubase or Sonar or Reaper or Studio One, etc. just for the simple fact that it there are more options for the money and the studio's will follow suit because it will save them time and earn them more money.

The old model is dieing and a new one is starting to take a hold. As I said though it's not going to happen overnight it will take a while, but that is what is going to happen, people no longer need a major studio to make pro level recordings.

I feel you on the double files though, I still probably have 50 or so that I won't ever get tracked in that are sitting in Reason right now. They suck anyway so it isn't a big deal. Lol.

I agree with what you are saying, and digi drives me crazy sometimes (for fun search my name and pro tools shoot in the head on the forum) But even most project studios I know of are using PTLE.

One of my friends is the UI designer for Pro tools, he did most of the work on the new interface for Pro tools 8. I don't believe PT9 is coming any time soon.

The biggest asset PT has is that you can take the sessions anywhere easily. Just show up to your friends house with a hard drive and start working. But if you are a Cubase user and your friend is a Sonar user then life is not so simple.

I am a total tech nerd and I love all the DAWS but this is a huge advantage.

As far as catering to the home studio market I can tell you for sure that they sell 20+ times the number of Mbox's that 003 or HD systems.

The new AVID CEO is brilliant and I think he is steering the ship in a good direction but we will have to wait and see. Very cool stuff for sure :)

For sure, They definitely have a hold on the market, and they drive me crazy too, but at the same time it is what I have been using for going on 5 years now and I like it. I'm still using 7.4 and have the original MBox and this is the last version(8.0.1) that will support it. Which I knew it was coming but I'm still kind of bummed about it. On the other hand I'm looking at it as a good thing.

My skills have grown since I first started my foray into home recording and now want to get an interface with more in's and out's. I'm leaning towards a Profire 2626 and going the M-Powered route, but I know my luck and as soon as I get all that they are going release something amazing, and I'll buy it the day before I'm able to upgrade for free. lol

And the selling all the MBox's the do it would be really nice if they started listening to their customer base and give them what they wanted. There will always be a need for HD just that need will slowly lose market share with computers getting as fast as they are. Also there is some really cool computer technology getting ready to come out, such as USB 3.0 and Intel's Light Peak.

We'll see though I have high hopes because I generally like Pro Tools the editing is top notch and it gives me sample accurate recording. And their software is rock solid sure there are bugs like every other program, but nothing to the point that makes it unusable. It makes happy to hear that the new CEO is a brilliant guy so I have high hopes.
