1 thing you can do.....

save your "sample" (you know what i mean nathan sir...!) copy it, convert the copy to a low bit rate like 8 (you can do theis in all wave editors), this will add hiss and definate grit... <------HAZE'S TOP TIP!!!!!, then layer this sample on top of your orignal and hey presto a gritty, raw sample.....you culd also then add a small (and i mean small because it is digital i assume) amount of distortion to the copy

pz

oh you will prolly have to make the copy louder than the original, but have a play with the levels.....

Agreed. If you can get your hands on a 12-bit sampler just run your composed stuff through that. Or resample like Haze said. You can also run your composed stuff out to your tape deck and record it. Then record it back in from your tape deck with a lil punch and hiss.

Peace

try adding a very subtle distortion effect to some of the sounds in the track or you could play with compression e.g. make a split of the drums and then compress the fuck out of them and then mix them with the original drums. that s not specifically dirtying up the drums but it can give that impression.

^ that could also give the impression of a lo quality sound card, if done incorrectly or too blunt

DUDE!! Seoul P this is great man. Excellent link!! I've been needeing a little less clarity on my tunes, this is perfect. Here, try out these VST synths and effects if you don't already have them, they'd be great to use with the vinyl sim.

2 keys I have used for awhile since people used to tell me the sounds are either too clean or something to that effect......have some nice dirty drum samples that always helps, I have some specifically I got of of some old 60's and 70's records....a tip on a lot of old records from back then sometimes the drummer is mic'd in the beginning and you can get some nice 1 shots from them that capture the ambience of the room right before the recording begins the drummer might have an intro fill or let the kick or snare drop all by itself going into the song I found tons of drum samples like that , I find a lot on older ballads etc from the 60's and early 70's some of those songs had a live feel to them when the engineer recorded the session.....

you can take some dead air off of some vinyl and mix it with drums too but getting a good one shot sample is money...

I find that if I wanna make a track have a sampled feel the number one thing are using INSERTS with filters and lofi effects especially on pianos and organs in conjunction with gritty drum samples

If you sample your own composed shit, make sure it's layered, and filter it out. Even take one of your old beats, with bass and everything in it, take a chop of it, chop it up more, and filter out the low end. It doesn't necessarily have to be "dirty" meaning 12-bit, but if you took some tape noise and mixed it in, it wouldn't sound too bad.

Just make sure you layer some shit on top of it and it, and take a random piece of your own music and chop it up.

RJD2 used to sample all his shit. Then he started composing his own shit so that he wouldn't have anything to clear, and he re-sampled it. Shit sounds just like he sampled it, it's crazy.
