So, I'm looking to get a nice setup for making my music. I don't make beats or record any type of instruments it is strictly hiphop vocals that I lace over beats I cop. Now I'm trying to figure out if it would be better to cop a new computer with an Mbox 2 type ish..or cop some sort of HD recorder like a Roland or some shit. All I'm trying to do is hook my mic and shit up..record high quality vocals..and then have a nice setup to edit them and master the track. Can anyone elighten me? I posted on a couple forums and people take too long to respond I'm looking to know what I want in like 5 days.

I have about 3 or 4 g's I can dedicate to this but I'd like to keep it around 1500-2000 since I still need to buy a new mic and everything.

definitely go the Protools route, in my opinion it gives you more options and its more functional and easier to use than Digital Recorders

if you gonna be tracking beats from MPC or keyboards you may want to get the Digi 002 or Digi 002 rack

but the M box is definitely a nice tool if you just usin software to make ur beats and u just wanna record vocals and edit

u can track beats with the Mbox also it just takes longer cuz it has less inputs

its a hard desion. I have used pro tools several times a my friends house and its great all the options that you get flexability. But having a HD recorder limits you and makes it fun. I like having the knobs and faders and the cutting and pasting is not that bad. You can get real good records with a cheap VS-890 or 1880. You have more loot than that so you can afford a vs2480 or 2400 which are very dope machines and give you most CPU options, but your going to have to mess around and see what you like

shit cutting and pasting is that bad when u cant see the waveform

plus protools has so many plug-ins that can be used with it

in protools u can fly hooks in a couple of seconds once u get used to doing it instead of recording a hook each time, and editing small words is so quick its ridiculous

I just like the flexibility of having everything on the screen in front of me, if ya still want to turn knobs and what not u can get one of the control surfaces that are compatible

I used to own a Boss BR-1180 Digital Recorder and I thought it was the shit till I got Protools M-Box, then later the Digi 002 rack

Not to mention you can easily take your session files to mostly any studio and have it pop up with no probs

but like he said it just depends on what you like using, go to a music store or a friends house and mess around with both to see what suits u

I would go the Pro Tools route as well. Not to mention if you want to save your session and have someone else mix it professionally later on, they have Pro Tools at Your Local Studio, America.

But if you want, I'm selling an 8-track digital recorder (Fostex DMT-8) for cheaper than a Pro Tools setup. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who wants to have unlimited flexibility, but let me know if you're interested.
