I was reading this interview where Dr. Dre's right hand man basically was talking about this "vault" that Dre has that contains every single beat that he ever made, including all the tracks that didn't make the albums and experimental stuff too. He mentioned that the material that was in the vault was mind-blowing and ahead of its time.
Another example is Kanye West was quoted as saying that he routinely keeps his best beats for himself. Imagine how ill RZA "could" have been if his material wasn't lost to a flood prior to the release of the Tical album.

My question is
Are you currently holding on to beats that you feel are so ill that you need to hold them for your own releases??
Are you working on a new style (you don't have to be specific) that you feel will change the face of hip hop??
Or do you have joints in your stash that are ill but you couldn't get that sample cleared or whatever. Share your thoughts!

lol i see that no one has answered your questions.

im sure a lot of people have. I know i am. Networking is great, but sometimes it is better to keep your best beat for yourself or your close entourage. When people hear your idea, anyone can remake it somehow. It also depend if you want to work with an artist with beats already made, or from scratch. It depends also if you want to build a catalogue or if you want to work with local artist just to be heard.

Are you working on a new style (you don't have to be specific) that you feel will change the face of hip hop??

Nope. If you sound different naturally, it is good for you. Hiphop is already Hiphop with us or without us.

Or do you have joints in your stash that are ill but you couldn't get that sample cleared or whatever?

thats why you have to "Chop" more your sample so you wont get caught.

Another filmscoring guy, that's a good thing. Most of the time I start off in beat making mode, but as I progress into changing up different sequences, a great deal of my beats
develop their own theme, and lose that hip hop edge. I'm working on a couple projects
with a few indie film makers so maybe some of those "lost sequences" can come to life on the big screen (or bootleg straight to video lol)

at this early stage of the game i have to expose some of my best work in order to get attention, there are a few i plan on hanging onto, that i may put out later, maybe. as far as working on a new style, naw, i'm still in the early stages of learning right now. right now i'm just knockin whatever comes across to me. whatever dope samples i find, i'll bang'em out. peace.

no I'm not, my best stuff goes to the rapper I produce for, I'm a rapper too, but he is way better than me, and I give it to him

My style is kinda crazy, I don't make club joints or nothing hype, I make that dark and epic type of stuff with drums patterns that can make the song hype but its not

I have a few songs that I sampled, my rapper done songs to it but I'm not releasing it just bcuz I'm scared of getting sued...lol

My Best

I think that my best work is done quicker than when im just in the lab for hours on a beat. When I throw on an old vinyl and I hear something that instantly catches my ear and from there its to Adobe Audition to chop then to Fruity to sequence and spice her up. But yeah i think my best work is done within a half hour to an hour mixed and everything.

Yes, i got ALOT of tracks im holdin' for myself when i decide i wanna start rappin' seriously again. Cuz i dont think no one can rap on it right other than me. And i also have tracks im holdin' just in case i work with a major artist and i wanna impress a nigga.

and i been workin' on a new sound for about a year. its not off the wall, but just enuff to know its me. kinda like a just blaze. not too distinct, cuz when u really distinct u cant be flexible. just enuff too know who it is.

and i got none im holdin' cuz of samples. i'll worry about dat when im swimmin' in 100 G's.

Yeah, exactly we have never even heard RZA's best beats, because the flood in his basement happened in late 93 maybe early 94, so shit like Only built for Cuban Linx was from the "new batch" of beats. Anybody who has lost all their beats for whatever reason, already knows that you go thru a "rush period" where you try to get your collection back up to its old level.

If i make any dope beats i try and get them heard as much as possible, but if a lame emcee wants to use them then i might hold back coz they deserve better.

Are you working on a new style (you don't have to be specific) that you feel will change the face of hip hop??

Kanye did/done this. I try and make different stuff sometimes, but it usually ends up shaping to the usual hip hop sound.

Or do you have joints in your stash that are ill but you couldn't get that sample cleared or whatever. Share your thoughts!

I dont use samples (apart from vocals) so had no trouble there.

Just because you might think it's your best doesn't mean it is...People mainly artist like what you like but if you make a beat that you don't like at all most times they'll love it..So like dre everyone should invest in some kind of vault to save everything you make because one mans trash is another mans treasure...I just got a 120 gig external hard drive that I'm using for my music only and music related programs pretty soon i'm going to cop a 60 gig i-pod for all my beats and complete songs

As far as holding beats I'm not a rapper right now I'm only working with one artist and just because he uses a beat dosen't mean you can't shop it you own the beat the artist owns the lyrics do what you can when you can and how you can

There's no way I'm going to save my best beats for myself...that would just be selfish on my part. If you're a good producer...then most of the beats you make would be good...so why does it matter??

And the guy above me is right...it's hard to say what your best beat is...I let other people determine how good my beats are...cuz me...I don't really know a damn thing to tell you the truth.

I dont hold onto nothing! it actually encourages me to step up my game and make something better, if I make a hot beat. So the quicker I let it go, the better, cause I know its gone & I have to outdue that beat. Hip hop is so spontaneous though...Hot beats come & go.

But I have had signed artist take my beats and try to have someone else re-do it, so they can avoid paying me. All these artist act like they dont have money. truth is the Game is shady!!! cover your ass no matter what your told, no matter how nice they are, no matter how many times they take you to dinner! Cover your ass!! Copyright!

A funny story is I did a beat for a group on Bungalo Records ( Universal ) As soon as I was done Recording & everything...I copyrighted it & put them down as Co-writers ( I aint that shady! ) they never payed me and when the paperwork was getting complete for the album. They're manager contacts me about a couple of songs for it. I said I never got payed and I copyrighted the song. they offer me some cash to sign it over. So I end up getting Paid way more than what I asked for in the first place. hahhaaa
