Define: Hip-hop Music

Could someone define what is hip-hop music for me?

Is it the the drums, the rapping, the sampling, the synths or what??

i would say the drums, you can put virtually anything over break beat drums and call it hip hop. In the words of El-P, "As long the drums are hip hop, ill put anything over the top."

but that isnt really a definition, but a good way of telling if a tune is hip hop or not.....

HIP HOP IS "RAP" THAT ISNT READILY ACCEPTABLE BY THE MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE.

AND YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIP HOP AND RAP.

RAP IS THE MARINE CORPS I GUESS YOU CAN SAY. THE BIG BAD BULLY THAT POUNDS YOUR EAR DRUMS WITH COMMERCIALISM, SEX, AND VOILENCE. HIP HOP REPRESENTS THE DIPLOMATS: LOVE, RELATING, POLITICS. HIP HOP WILL EVENTUALLY REPLACE THE MILITARY RULE OF RAP AND ESTABLISH A SET FORM OF GOVERNMENT.

IN OTHER WORDS: RAP IS THE FORERUNNER OF A PEACE TIME ERA OF HIP HOP.:thumb: TRUST ME.

I hate to say it...but go and watch beatstreet if you havent ever...I used to watch that movie over and over...it was an 80's flick, so yeah, it kinda had some funny stuff that is a little dated now, but that movie is soooo HIPHOP!!lol...

the lines between musics are fading...by the time are kids are able to rock headphones there wont be any hip hop, rap, rock, none of that.

Hip Hop music would Imo, be classified by the Beatz and MC. Obviously, you can't have sum head banger screamin over the beatz. If someone is spittin over a beat, I say its rap/hip hop. If its good or not, thats a totally different question...

JUST LIKE JAZZ WAS THE PREDECESSOR TO BEBOP AND THEN BEBOP TO RAP. HIP HOP WILL BE THE PARENT GENRE TO MANY SUB CULTURES IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ALREADY WE HAVE THUGS, GANGSTAS, BACK PACKERS, NERD RAPPERS, BLING BLINGAS, PLAYBOYS.... ALL OF US CAN FIT INTO ONE OF THOSE SUBCULTURES MAYBE EVEN INTO SOME OR ALL OF THEM... Yo i have seen that a long ass time ago!....Shit was pretty ill if i remember correctly....As for tha one of tha biggest factors - CULTURE....i very much agree it is a culture and i love being a part of it and contributing to it, thats why in my list above i made it tha one thing that should standout beyond tha rest...

Hey i've seen all those films atleast once. Graffiti Rock, wildstyle, beat street, scratch, battle sounds. I know what hip-hop culture is, but i definitley think it's boundaries are getting pushed all the time (which i think is a good thing).

Like i would think that the BPM for most hip hop is between 80 - 100.
And the drums will always be a combination of kik-snare-hi hat type thing.

But then a song like Missy Elliot "Get ur freak on" comes out, and this song is 130BPM, has a totally eastern infulence throughout the song.

ya get me???
