Info(jacked from freshselects.net)
------------------

In The Ruff is the highly anticipated debut album from new DC hip hop group The Diamond District, created by state veterans Oddisee, X.O. & yU. In The Ruff is the answer for any lover of hip hop who asks the question - ‘Where did that grimy East coast sound go?’

The group was founded by rapper/producer Oddisee, who has a long list of production & collaboration credits with the likes of Freeway, Talib Kweli, Saigon, Little Brother, Trek Life, Charles Hamilton, Jazzy Jeff, Buckshot, Royce The 5′9″, Nikki Jean, Muhsinah, J-Live, Lil Fame of M.O.P. , Skyzoo and many more. Oddisee’s soulful, haunting samples over bass-heavy beat breaks create the perfect instrumentals for him, XO & yU to match with their street savvy, politically conscious lyrics.

In The Ruff is a raw mid-90’s Boom-Bap themed album for the DC state of mind, destined to appeal to all lovers of hip hop’s golden era, managing to travel back in time and push the boundaries of DC Hip-Hop simultaneously.”

This is a limited edition, free download of the clean version of the album. Mello Music Group & Oddisee Music will be partnering up for the official, un-edited retail release of the album with added bonus tracks, so look out for that coming soon. I’ve also got some dope exclusives from the different members of Diamond District coming to the site in the next week, so as always, stay tuned.

nice .. just skimming through the track there is some hard beats .. the drums for who i be are grimey as shit lol ... i hate the way this album is mixed .. its muddy as hell and some of the ryhmes get buried in the beats. it has a weird sound to it. like they were going for a 36 chambers sounds but didnt hit it.. or maybe its just a lo fi version they are giving away for free?

Ahh ya see thats the beauty holmz

Personally liked the way the album was mixed, i think they went lo-fi on purpose becasue it reminds you of casset tapes in the mid 90's. Them drums thump and that lo-fi mix brings me back. This type of mixing does not work for other style of hip hop IMO but it fits this style perfeclty..

If you listen to mobb deep - infamous (one of my fav albums) it has the same sound.

i disagree. i got 36 chambers and some other grimey classics right here and there is a difference to my ears. it seems lo fi in the bad way to me .. i think its a problem when u have to strain to make out the words. i mean u could hear every word clearly on 36 chambers or the infamous even though they were grimey as shit.

I have a compressor that does just this, in fact it sounds like they are using it, I need to get home to look up the name but it def adds this type of feel to the track when used properly.
Fairchild 660 I believe....
It been my experience if you put the 660 on the master fader hit the c1 preset and then adjust to taste, then you will get this sound.

I like this ep

Yo I have now finished listening to this, and there isnt one bad song on it, conversley, every song on here is badass.
I love the production and the whole group really "Brings it back" to that realness. I love the griminess of the whole thing and one of the best features of this lp is.......

You have to turn it up if you want to hear it loud! Imagine that! They arent playing the loudness war!

Thanks for the hookup Classic Im gonna be studying this album for quite a while!

REAL HIP HOP!!! Oddisee is the shit!

I personally like the way it was mixed as well. Very grimey feel to it. Its like the threw a bucket of mud on the tracks. I don't really like when tracks are "crisp sounding" anyway.
me either really...I love when tracks have that grittiness to um...this joint is off the hook though...the best release this year so far in my book...other than the illtravis joint...he he

I thought it was ok... Didn't really do it for me..

Production was cool, though.

Didn't like the mix... Sounded like I was listening to amateurs.
