Credits, how far do you go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a little research, but I would like to go a little more deep with my situation.

I understand that when you see credits and it states, Produced by Dr. Dre, it dosent necessarly mean Dre made the entire beat, or the beat at all, it means he was the one who put it together, orchistraighted the details such as the recording facility, final calls, etc.

Is this correct, or some what correct. He is the deal. The name of my label is PK21 Productions and I am PMJ Owner/Producer. I work along with another local label and we share artists and are working together to make albums but do solo releases under our prespecitve labels too. Lets say I recorded an artist(Teddy Bower) on a beat that was not made by me, it was made by (Jonny B Good) of Gettin Down Records!, the other label I work with. The beat is already broken down, I record the track at my crib with my gear. The other producer(Bob B) who I directly works with me udner my label mixes most of the songs that are recorded at my crib, we also make a lot of producer type decissioins together! We include the artist in the mixing sessions and recording sessions and pretty much give him creative control on how he wants the track to go! But we all participate. The track will be featured on an album that is being produced by PK21 Productions and Gettin Down Records.

This shit is hard to explain, my bad, but here is what I come up with as far as credits!
Now, this is just for the song, not the album.

"I'm A Dope Emcee"
Performed and written by(T. Bower) Produced by PMJ and Bob B. for PK21 Productions and Gettin Down Records. Beat produced by Jonny Be Good. Recorded at PK21 Productions. Mixed by Bob B.

LOL, see where I am getting at. Realistcially, for this album we are working on, I will be doing most of the beats and my other producer will do a grip, the guy from the other Label will submit a few beats and we'll have a few more from other producers! All but a few tracks will be recorded and mixed by my guy and I at my crib. I dont want to short my self credit for things, but I dont want to lack giving proper credits! Any help would be appreciated. Thanx. PM

Producer means a lot of things

Generally speaking the producer is the person who makes the beat, but if someone takes that beat and adds stuff to it or arranges, they can also be considered a producer.

My advice would be to discuss it with the artist and record label and make it VERY clear (get it in writing) of what type of credit you'll be getting

holla

I would personally write:
"I'm A Dope Emcee"
Performed and written by T. Bower. Produced by Jonny Be Good/Gettin Down Records. Co-produced and arranged by PMJ and Bob B. Recorded at PK21 Productions. Mixed by Bob B. at PK21 Productions.

But I would probably write to our member "God" as well, if I would like the professional answer.

This is one of the most talked about threads since I've been on here, you could do a search and there's probably an answer, I bet and maybe a GOD answer too, but just about any cd you pick up has the Executive producers name on the cover....Brandy was one of the executive producers on her latest album....does she make beats or arrange the tracks....maybe but probably not...no.......Puffy Produced Carl Thomas.........same question....does he make tracks, play guitar or program.....NOPE......anyhow man I wouldn't get so caught up in to a title....especially being an up and coming.....because not unless you are producing an indie piece of work will your name be properly credited and plastered on the cover or inside sleeve credit listings....it could appear there on the small print on the inside cover possibly if you are lucky enuff....but overall the executive producer that pulled all of the little guys together to make the cd will get just about all honors.....you probably won't complain too much if you've been compensated and get some royalties........and even in the majors....a more known producer that you might have collaborated with or gave a lil piece will overshadow you....that's how it is.......want to shine......get an artist.....start making songs and you can put your name all over the place and won't have to worry about the title so much.

THanks fellahs for all you advice a views! I'm sure I will get it figured out. It's just one of those things I want to get out of the way and stay consistent with. And to do that, I've got to get it right the first time.

One question though, I've looked through a lot of credits from albums of many, but I noticed on Eminem's credits for "With Out Me' in ()'s it has (M. Matthers, K. Bell, J. Bass, M. McLaren, A. Dudley, T. Horn). I always thought that people listed in the () where the writters and vocal performers within a track. Am I correct?

Thanx, PM

you're basically correct - it does include producers as well. If they sample a song it also can include the writers of that song too.
