Do u have to get a sample clearance before you copyright the work yourself? For example, if I have a song with a sample in it and have not used it commercially or made any money off of it, but I copyright it for my own protection, is that legal?

Search the forums with "copywrite" there's some huge threads on it.

But I also have a question that I couldn't find. When you send in your work to be copywritten (on a cd i assume), do you have to pay the 30 dollar fee for each beat, or does that cover all the beats on the cd? or is just that exact collection of beats that gets copywritten as its own piece?

You can copyright everything as a "suite" or a collection so you do not have to pay $30 for each beat, just for the whole group and it will cover every beat individually. I have asked numerous musicians about this and they all say that it is cool to do it like that.
