my question is... if i am using a limiter such as the likes of the L1 maximizer by waves in my master mix chanel... do i need to use an addtional compressor for a mixdown? i like the way it sounds without a compressor but from what i read it is good to use compression in a final mix... or is something like the L1 a compressor as well as limiter? i am not sure..someone help me out :headbang:

yes you need a compressor, a multi band compressor at that. that way you can compress over different fequency ranges. like if you need more compression on the low end, and less compression on the hi end. multi band compression is the way to go. then use limiter.

great looks nas ... i actually was using a compressor that i thought was an EQ! im tryin to get tha hang of my new plugins.... i got another question ...here's my current mastering chain... vintage warmer>multi band compressor> space enhancer> limiter ...... is that a good chain or do i need to switch around the orders or add another aspect? i have crappy speakers so it is hard for me to be precise about my mastering

i would put the multiband after the warmer, then space enhancer, then limiter. NOTE: the vintage warmer is an all in one mastering plugin. actually i would eliminate the warmer and stick with the other three. or just use the warmer. and definately use your ears. a pair of monitors would help also. lol

yeah i hear dat dac but i cant really afford to have my stuff pro fessionally mastered right now so im tryin to use what i got..im not doin a big release or nothing...i just want the best sound wit the equipment i have available... i think personally iits sounding good but i just wanted to make sure i wasn't doing anything completely wrong or destuctive... like breaking any set rules or anything

the vintage warmer is a multiband compressor, what more would you need ? Soft knee compression included. I would leave the stereo enhancer out of it.

i agree with formant. too much stuff in the chain will start fucking with the way you hear things. before you use any of that tweak each sound individually as much as possible. you may find you don't need anything on your final mix. personally the only time i add compression to my final mix is when i have a beat that isn't tracked out. like when its just on a stereo track and i can't tweak all the sounds individually.
