If your serious about computer art then buy Adobe Photoshop. It is the best program of its type commercially available, its an industry standard and used by all the pros

^^^ I'm gonna second that.

Find a student going to design school he or she will be more than willing to help you learn it. Probably should try a she so you can rub on some boobies after she show's you how to rubberstamp and add lens flares to all your bling for your CD covers.

Yes adobe is very good and is also my number one company pick, but there are also good things made by companies like macromedia which i think is a good company also in there own way....Theres also quark, but ive never got real serious with it since its main focus is more on publishing.

Basically:
For object based art/photo manipulation/2-D, and some 3-D art
go with photoshop.

For more of a design element use:
adobe illustrator, macro freehand, some people use painter but i look at painter like tha camero white trah car of the car world...basically its just cheap and tacky.

Hey,

You can't go wrong with Illustrator and Photoshop; Illustrator for your vector/type/layout stuff, and Photoshop for your raster stuff. Freehand kicks-ass from the Macromedia side of things, but if you're using Photoshop it will be easier to switch between it and Illustrator.

Some would use Quark or InDesign for the layout...this is ultra high-end pro stuff and possibly overkill for something simple like a cd cover.

Painter is like a virtual paintbrush, it offers you all sorts of media to work with, like chalk, pencils, crayons, acrylic, oils, inks, watercolors, etc. Most people I know who use this have a graphic tablet to work with it...

Here's some graphics using Maya 3D, Painter and Photoshop...the sky and texturing was done in Painter.

Ok - In general i dont think painter is as bad as i made it out to be...im jus pissed cuz i have to use it over adobe stuff at school, plus im workin on some archaic (how ever tha hell you spell that!?) computers and all tha software is hella outdated like by 3 or 4 versions!....But i have to admit that painter has its ups and downs...i just like tha design tools and tha way their interfaced more in illustrator...but thats jus me. Painter can do cool things you jus gotta really get into tha software like any other prgm - i jus refuse to waste my time since i like adobe way better.
