^^^ This.

Dj's used to bring new hip hop to the people, now dj's are told what to play, and what to play is decided by which label paid the station the most money, which is why the diversity left music. It became a cookie cutter maximum return on investment business. There needs to be more balance between the creativity and the business, right now the business has taken over.
Amen!

That's a good point though. In the 90s I made mixtapes just for fun but at one point I sold some in a local shop. I sold some but not too many and I remember the owner telling me it's because I don't have super-current-hard-to-find songs on my tapes. I understand that but my tapes were all about blends, so it was something that the listener would enjoy, rather than just play the song and not doing anything with it then screaming over the track.

My point is that yes it's important to play current stuff but if you're not doing anything with the song then you're not a DJ, you're just some person playing a song. But then again, I've realized over the years that most people are SHEEP. They just want the latest shiny thing, in this case, music.
