Reason 5/Record...gone back to FL...anyone else use FL 10?

Rav3, I tried it, it looks cool and has some awesome features but personally I went back to FL9 because of the changes they made to the Playlist Section. In FL9 you have the option of choosing how you create beats (tracks or patterns), in FL10 you don't (they've kinda combined the two). As far as I know, FL10 is the first to do this.

The problem is... the tracks list in FL10 DOES NOT relate to a specific pattern in your sequencer whereas in FL9 (using the pattern list), DOES. This is very important in terms of how you create beats and your workflow. Bottom line is, if you compose (using tracks) all or most of your beats, FL10 is a beast! If you use a lot of samples and chops (making patterns), FL9 is a beast!

That said, they both WILL do the job but FL9 is better in terms of what we generally do here and with hip hop production and it's workflow (considering that hip hop production is mostly sampling and creating patterns).

I disagree dac, i really like the new workflow, especialy in regards to chopping. Im not going to make vid but just drag, drop and chop in playlist works excellent.

Fl isnt the first to do this, what youre looking at is more like logic, cubase, sonar. All tracks can handle audio, for patterns you pick which one to add on any! track.

Im wondering how many FL users here have found the new plugin delay compensation, also wondering if anyone here takes notice of the delay when using plugins at all lol.

As to rav, what you encounter in reason, you will encounter with FL or any other daw. Imo, any daw gets the job done, its between the ears :)

You must have never used FL9 or your workflow wasn't optimized when you did...In FL9 you can be in the middle of a million things and click a pattern in your Playlist and go directly to that pattern in your sequencer if you need to modify or do whatever to it. You can't do that efficiently in 10 which slows down your workflow. Also, when making a beat using a pattern in 10, you can't efficiently place your patterns in your timeline because 10 will put that pattern on ANY track anywhere -versus- having one track thats dedicated to that particular pattern, which means, now you have to either reopen your pattern in the sequencer or access it from your pattern button in the top right corner. This is a good tool for composing music, not really good for using samples.

I was refering to FL10 being the first version that I know of to NOT have the option of picking between "patterns" or "tracks" in the playlist. FL10 only has tracks...FL9 has both!

lol, you joker! All versions since 2.54, whut!

You can't do that efficiently in 10 which slows down your workflow.

How is doubling-clicking a pattern in the playlist not efficient ? I know you refer to selecting the pattern in playlist, hit F6 and edit the previously selected pattern, but now its one double click.
I have to admit that the opposite is missing; the selected pattern in step-editor is not the selected pattern to draw in the playlist automaticaly or i missed an option to enable it.

Also, when making a beat using a pattern in 10, you can't efficiently place your patterns in your timeline because 10 will put that pattern on ANY track anywhere -versus- having one track thats dedicated to that particular pattern.

Thats personal, probably refering to your overview of the playlist having a dedicated pattern(track)listing. That makes it easy to know what purpose a pattern has along the timeline. Im just guessing here, but you know how the average playlist in FL looks like, patterns everywhere.
Last tracks ive done, all! patterns are on track one. Again, its personal preference.

which means, now you have to either reopen your pattern in the sequencer or access it from your pattern button in the top right corner.

Nuh-uh! F6 or double-click

This is a good tool for composing music, not really good for using samples.

You shouldnt make much distinction between the 2, no matter how you look at it, its still note data. The only difference is tuning since all A=440 in note data, but ofc, not with samples. How you treat notes or samples are exactly the same in pretty much any daw.

I guess this sums it up in a nutshell. Can't debate that point. Using the F functions only opens the window, it doesn't change the selected pattern, you still have to manually change them and in FL9, one click on the pattern in the playlist and it changes automatically.

Altering notes and altering phrases are 2 entirely different things. You may only want 1 note changed to a flat in a composition. You wouldn't want the entire phrase tuned flat in a sample and the only way to do that is to micro chop the phrase - increasing your time and workflow. Basically, all of the tools that you use in your track playlist are geared towards 1 note manipulation and thats just about useless on a sampled phrase.

Ok, i just had to check this out since i ran into this issue aswell. In FL9 you could conveniently use left/right cursor to go previous/next pattern when the stepsequencer window is focused. This still works but it wont make a reference to patterwrite mode in playlist, it will only do this by using the the patternselect function in the menubar (aside from the pattern/audio select dropmenu in the playlist editor. This could really use an update, either menubar or shortkey should update the currently selected pattern to write in playlist.

Ah, i get it, phrases, not chops. This is very personal again, many roads lead to rome :)In fl10, there is one obvious choice here, newtone or pitcher. That's the most straightforward workflow, but i dont have it and you probably dont either.

Aside from that option its really a matter of cutting audio directly in the playlist and that's how i work now.
I drag the whole sample if not cut beforehand into the playlist. If a phrase has a part which needs tuning/tweaking i cut out the part, then rightclick on the colored bar (with the clip name on it) and select "make unique". From then on i have all the sampler settings for just that part i wanted to change. Actualy, in the whole process i dont even need to be anywhere else but the playlist. I dont run into this as much because i cut tracks for samples in soundforge before i use them but if i get an idea which implies altering the content of a phrase then this is the way to do it in FL10.

Still dac, I really recommend FL10, there are more pro's than cons in regards to workflow and fully automatic pdc is absolutly one of them. Heck, i even salute the option to finaly have a duplicate function(ctrl+b) to speed up workflow.

Oh yeah bro, no doubt...FL10 is a beast compared to FL9 OVERALL. FL9 just works better for me and you are 100% right, it is a personal preference. I'm really putting forth an effort to get away from so much sampling but my forte is more bass guitar when it needs to be geared more around keys. As I get better on the keys and composing, I will need FL10 to really freak my music the way it should be done. Great topic, some good info for those trying FL10.

Most of the sounds in Urban Arsenal (the 1st not the second) we made from Reason :)

anyway ... change can be good if it keeps you inspired and creating music. Let us know how it goes fam
