the rode ntk is a dope mic!!! we use it a lot here at school... i love that mic.

Get a good mic pre if you can. The NTK is great mic, but IMO all of the Rode mics sound good. I have 2 NT1000s. Got both for around $350 (one was a display mic).

I'm now thinking of a studio projects C -1 ( condenser) and a Shure Dynamic mic. I can get both within the $600 budget. Would you (Tachyon) get two mics just to cover diffrent voice range - would you find it necessary?

it does depend on your voice though. you need to get one which is good for your voice and brings out the best in it. trial some out if ytou can
