Human beatboxing used to be the stuff of comedy films, a hip hop relic put on the shelf along with the Fatboys.
But new talent like Rahzel and UK-born Killa Kela have heralded a resurgence in the artform in the last few years.
We find out how beatboxing has lost its novelty tag and gained credibility. We catch up with originators like Doug E Fresh as well as asking where it's going now.
Plus there's a chance to get a tips from the experts in our own 1Xtra beatboxing lesson. It’s a chance to do the click roll and vocal scratch with the best of them!

Word this is my thing. When i was like 8 or 9 or even younger not sure, i had fat boys 'crushin' or something, that is what got me started on that whole beatbox tip.
People used to love that 'snare' i learned from them.

I remember in elementary school there was me and this other black dude named jamal who was the only ones with some beatbox skills, and we would always be battling eachother (and it was battle for real cause we werent homies or nothing, we didnt hang with eachother) and everytime we were at the same place we would be showing off lookin at eachother all steamed up with our hands cupped up in front of our mouths, he would do some shit and when/if he messed up i would do my thing, back and forth. There would be some kids standing around checkin us out rooting for us. (that was at bitburg us air force base elemantary in germany btw). Many times the other kids would be biased and would say some wack shit like i couldnt beat box because i was white, i didnt pay no attention to that too, cause i got my respect once in a while from jamal or some other kids who would be trying to get their beatbox on. (aaah, memory lane )

I remember the first time i had ever even heard of 'the roots' i was at a festival in belgium some years back, and i of course went to that shit it being one of the very few hiphop acts at that festival. It was mad dope, i was impressed most of all by the lack of turntables and just some dudes with instruments (just cause i hadnt seen that much before in hiphop acts live, not cause i think tables are wack, on the contrary ). We was about to leave and were walkin away when suddenly me and my boy heard wicked scratching going on. We looked at eachother like, wtf, turned around agin, and started looking indian style for turntables, wasnt there hehehehe. It was jsut this dude with a mic, and he was doing that shit. it was phat man, that shit rekindled my love for beatboxing (cause i had left it in the corner for a while).

aw man. that is such sweet shit. i seem to find myself beat boxing more than i mean to. just when i'm waiting for something to do, or anything. sometimes i'll do it. i used to do it in the shower sometimes. but then it would take too long while i was getting ready. it's amazing the variety that these people can achieve.

Werd. I love beatboxin. Man buffy from the fat boys. And dougie fresh was the shit back in the day. I used to practice " the show" all the time. Aw man and when lil vicious "Freaks" came out I used to walk thru the street doing dat beat as loud as possible. Even had the part where he's " rewinding the record back" down perfect. Nowadays I like to do the beat juggle killakeller style. Him and Scratch (what happenned to rhazel?) from the roots.... On a level of 1to 10 id say those guys are a 10. I put my self as a high 7-8. ....... Shit im beat boxing right now as I type this. I think ima do a lil something for the radio show.... Maybe. Lol....
