Beat Styles.....

how important do you think it is to do several styles of tracks. me for instance, i try all styles. it's funny though what people consider hot or not depending on wher they are from, their circles, or their influence. for example, when i'm in nashville, tn....heads only wanna hear krunk stuff so i do a lil bit of that. when i'm in philly...heads wanna hear new/neo soul stuff or basic stuff that they can flip intricte rhyme schemes over. certain parts of ny...heads tell me they want gully stuff...other parts of ny...heads say they want jiggy stuff like neptunes.

i'm often a victim of playing a hot beat in the wrong area. heads start hatin'....."that's wack...it's too gully", "too jiggy", "too slow", "too fast", too whatever!!! at the same time, other heads are tellin' me (in different areas of the country of course)...."that's hot!!!" WHY DON'T PEOPLE JUST RECOGNIZE A BEAT FOR THE STYLE IT IS OR FITS INTO AND THEN JUDGE IT BY THAT CRITERIA??!??!?

granted...some beats don't fit into any genre or sub-genre.....but originality and pushing the envelope is good in many situations....

....anyway...just venting....holla at me ........

Word up I feel what ya sayin,,,but many people only listen to a certain style. As producers and musicians,,,we can appreciate different styles, but the average ears cant!

yea i feel u . Being born and raised in FL and currently living in baltimore. THer defaintly have been some problems as far as my style of music. The fact that southern music is in style now has helped a little but i definalty feel your pain.

I also cosign with what stress said. The avrage cat cant respect differnt styles of hip hop.

Yea if you listen to my tracks then you will hear all kinds of different stuff ! I rarely set out to make a certain type of beat unless sum1 has said make sumthing like this etc ! I just kinda make up my mind with regards to sounds as i go along and go with wot fits best at the time ! Im trying to develop my own signature sound but im not trying to limit what types of beats i can make if that makes sense !

Hey this thread isn't hot...I'm not feeling it. It's just not my style, sorry

Just playing...I do understand the issue though. I do hate it when people are like that, but mostly when crossing genres...you know when people can't respect your genre or tell that something is quality, even though their don't enjoy it.
However, on rare occasions, I can be like that myself...but then I'm usually really tired, fucked up or depressed or something, and don't have enough energy to appreciate other stuff than my personal favourites.

to be honest this is a non issue for me.

i understand what you're sayin- i get it all hte time " yuor beats is to mellow, i like that gutter shit" one friend of mine is like "your beats are too 'symphony' (whatever the hell THAT means)"

and that bugs me to no end.

however...................

oh well, you know? i make the music i make. i think versatility is important in the sense of being multi dimensional and if you have an across-the-board repetoi, thats a huge plus in that if you can drop anthems, soulful joints, basic joints, street tracks, etc., you can cover more ground.

at the end of the day, your still you. eff all that "i want to hear this type of track" nonsense.... because thats backwards. you have to do yuo, be able to mold and adapt yes, but still do yuo and find yuor particular audience.

Good topic! - I see it as an issue if you want to sell yourself to tha masses, tho if yer not concerned with capitalizing on yerself its not as big of an importance in tha perfection of ones craft if ya feel me? This isnt like 100% accurate, but i think that for tha most part you can safely believe this.

Ill tell you this tho: everyone eventually will find theyre own vibe and sound regardless of copycating someone else. As a musician or beatmaker youl mature and figure out what works better for you and what doesnt, and that right there alone may sculpt what u might consider - "Your individual sound".
Please dont belive you have to limit yourself tho to one sound! - This would simply minimize what you can be capable of musically!....That is one of my biggest beefs with upcoming talent. I see these kids makin copycat beats of theyre favorite artists, instead of tryin to learn from that sound and build on that...Yo!, Im not sayin its bad to take from other musics tho, not at all. But i think that its very important if your serious about your musical abilities to find your own path instead of biting someone elses....I mean every type of music for that matter borrows from tha music before, so you can consider that bitting in a sense, but not all of that is biting if your learning more than stealing.
Tha key thing i think is to apply yourself more than simply replicate a sound...If you can do that tha odds of you yourself creating a dope sound of your own is much more probable...(even if Mtv, and tha masses arent jumpin on your back)...At least your being original with yours.

straight up, do what u do.....if you make gully beats, keep it gully....if you on a Neptunes tip, space out.....if u like the southern style, keep it crunk....if you can do it all, then do it all....don't let anyone say your shit is too "this", or your beats are too "that"....Keep this in mind, one man's garbage, is another man's treasure....Music is art, and art is in the eyes (or ears) of the beholder....You can't please everyone, just do what u think is hot and nobody can ever tell you you're wrong....Peace
