Do you prefer MCs who write poetry aka nerd rap or do you like MCs who battle and have good punchlines. Please explain what you like or dislike about one or the other.

I prefer poetry. I get sick of all these cats who want beef and think they are the shit. Anyway....all these nerd rappers like Sage Francis and Dose One etc are the ones who shit on the rest in battles anyway.

Word up to MCs who havnt run out of shit to say and use their brain without an ego problem. Just my opinion... so dont give me shit like i have copped elsewhere for saying this.

peace

uh, poetry. i guess.... if i had to pick. battling (actual battling) is usually at its best when they have good punchlines and disses that make you laugh.... it isnt always about wanting beef, its just, you know, competition... but i do get annoyed with albums of "battling", where all it is is recycled similies (most people say metaphors but its usually not a metaphor thats used....) and just..... i dont know. i guess i am saying that chino xl irritates me...! so that sums it up: i think that "chino xl" rap is a bit full of itself and is really both useless and pointless.

but then poetry can be just as bad..... ever watch the poetry jam? some guys (and girls) get down but dag its like the intro on jay z's unplugged album sometimes......(its cold...... its winter..... its a cold winter....)

my friend has a cd of one of these local cats in riverside and sounds,well.... .homosexual to say the least. everything is very intelligently put together and if he were an actual mc with a dope delivery he might give the greats a run for their money...... but he talks, er, raps with a lisp and.AUGHHHHHHH it bugs. the only reason i would choose this is the fact that these guys at least have insight into the real world (usually...) but i guess i will just have to listen to my blackstar, outkast and (certain) nas albums until something else comes along.

Battle rap in a heart beat...being a battle rapper makes this choice susceptable to bias. But I can't resist the allure of battle rappers that can spit witty shit and still spit a dope ass topical. Personally, I'm not a fan of Sage Francis, Eyedea and some of the 'nerd' rappers dispite how big alot of em are on the battle scene also. I think thats cause a lot of em now a days tend to be on that spoken word tip, which I'm not really a fan of.

Cats like the Demigodz (especially Apathy, Celph Titled, Esoteric and Louis Logic), Tonedeff, Cunninlynguists, Canibus, Pack FM, Substantial, Jakki Da Motamouth, Copywrite, etc bring exceptional lyrics and can bring dope topics. Cunninlynguists Southernunderground and Louis Logics Sin-a-matic are 2 of the best albums on my rack because they're so creative, witty and flip topics that you'd never think of.

I guess really I love battle rap because it makes me laugh, it makes me think 'ooooooh shit!' at the utterence of a dope line and it can be used to produce a kinda sport. There is no greater satisfaction than writing a line that you know you can bust in a battle and get the crowd attentions!

lol @ Truth Told...yup...sadly the art of freestyle is dead. Although, a lot of the material I come with is from freestyle. But you have to have pre-written punches in your head incase they kill it and you need to take it up another level.

I find that everyone thinks FREESTYLE = BATTLE.

Its like cats cant think of anything else to freestyle about.....what ever happened to just speaking whats COMES TO MIND.

Long live shit off the top of the dome.

On the topic of battles again......i have alot of respect to breaker battles and dj battles because it is focused completely on bringing dope new skills into the culture, whereas battle rapping just makes all these little toys thing they can run around dissing cats who hold Hiphop down.

To write good poetry, it takes amazing talent. It also does to rap, however sometimes, when you rhyme, you loose the essence trying to rhyme the words. Poetry is pure imagination. Read THE ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE. tupac.

I was only refering to freestyle being dead in the battle scene. My bad that I didn't clarify that...truth is, freestyles aren't likely to cut it anymore in a competitive battle...you need strong pre-written stuff cause if you don't have it...chances are the other dude will and he's gonna win with it...

cats like sage, dose one, anti con r shite, some peeps try to pass spoken work/poetry as hyper creative but they really just a bunch of weak emcee's.

the only poetry type rappers that rips r cats like illogic and aesop rock
