Art. What defines art? or an Artist?

^^^ oh, I didn't realise he was a savant. I just looked at the pictures. What I said still applies though, even though he has no intention or awareness, if others recognise it as art then it still is. Of course whether it's good or not is another matter entirely.

i think there is a big difference between someone creating soley for monetary value and someone creating art that can be commercially accepted. getting ur art to the point where it can be appreciated on large scale is an art in itself. I think its taking the easy way out to sit back and criticize others for their "bad art" or whatever u wanna call it. Im sure soulja boi didnt make "crank dat" in his basment thinking it was going to be the phenomenon that it became. Im sure its just something that he did for his friends and it caught fire. I guess what im trying to say is that its easy to be the elitist individual that analyzes and pinpoints everything "wrong" with art. But its much more challenging and rewarding to be the individual that creates something that moves people and makes the people gravitate towards it. Art is such a subjective term i dont even think it can be classified in terms of good and bad... the way souljah boi does the crank dat is art (no HOMO!!) . He obviously does the dance really well and fluid but my fat uncle looks like a retard doing it. so what is art and what is not?

The distinction between what is art and what isnt has been a long running argument.
Like on the last TopGear(which I missed but was told about), there was a beautifully crafted car, but the art elites wont accept it as art, even though it is exceptionally designed.
Just because something is commercially popular doesnt neccesarily make it art, but I can see the point about an artist doing his thing his way, and then for the people to pick up on it and make it blow up, I can really see that that must be very rewarding for the artist. As much as we are told that Soulja boi is a myspace phenomenon, Im not so sure I believe the hype in that respect.
We have an artist in the UK called Lilly Allen, she too is supposed to be a myspace phenomenon, but her dad is a famous movie actor, he was in "shallow grave"(great film) amongst many other films. Im sure this is what opened the doors for her and not just her myspace presence, although I really like her music and style, Im not sure it is just talent that put her where she is now.

In reality, art is creativity, good or bad. I accept that. But in an age of packaged personalities the art is in making those pre determined identities as profitable to the masses as possible. Even if that means giving equal prominence to bad art as good art because even bad art can make lots of money. I think controversy is bad art, its tabloid style money making pure and simple "SEX, DRUGS AND VIOLENCE" it sells pretty much everything these days.
But even advertising is an art, managing a business is an art, bringing up kids is an art.
There is an art to lots of things, and it really is down to interpretation of the observer.

Im just fed up of endless movie remakes and sequels with nothing much original going on an any media form.
Sure theres plenty of controversy, but is that art?
There are more boundaries to be pushed than just shocking the public.

I should probably do a follow up thread about the lack of originality in media due to the lazyness of the fat cats running the media show.

As for the photos of the savant, savants are exceptional human beings in that they can register everything that the eyes see all at once, there in-built mental filters dont function so they see the world in a much better way, the downside of this is that they lose their communication skills. Savants are truly great mathematicians, artists, musicians because they see the big picture, where we only see what our mental filters allow us to see.
Savants are truly some of the greatest artists the world has ever seen.

Hey 2good, a point on the crap sequels and movie remakes. This annoyed me a little at first too, but I just don't go the movies as much now. I feel its a waste of time for me, I just find other forms of entertainment.

As far as movies go , all hollywood has done for like 10 years now, is copy everything in the asian market and americanise it..Freakin crappy. Yuck, there hasnt been an original idea anywhere for quite some time now.
2good if your start up a follow up thread on it, then I shall one day copy that thread and make it a part 2

Ash-getting ur art to the point where it can be appreciated on large scale is an art in itself
^ love that quote, very true.

But I like to sit down and watch a film from time to time, especially an action film. And you dont always know if its going to be an original film until you have seen it.
That M Night Shyamalan is really an original thinker, he does some great stuff. But I would never have known that unless Id actually watched the films.
Some of the most original ideas are coming from China/Japan right now.

Battle Royale - Still waiting for a US remake of this, lol
As well as the japanese horrors that get a US facelift.
Now we have the chinese kung fu films getting some real support from hollywood, although Im not entirely happy with all the results its going in the right direction.

I like to watch films, even the remakes, what bugs me is the lack of ideas. People paid far to much money to do nothing. Its the same with reporters, they are fed a story and are too fucking lazy to even check if its true these days. Real mainstream investigative journalism is almost non existant now.
The fat pockets have made everyone lazy, they are going to get paid whether they work for it or not.

I should stop ranting though about something that I cannot change because
1 I already look like I need some prozac or something,
2 Because the problem is so big, Im mixing up arguments and its getting a bit incoherant at times to explain it.
3 I need to make some music, lol

Im a born moaner, I like to moan, lol
If I feel something aint right I have to say something, I say it as I see it.
Some of my friends have always valued my honesty and know they can trust me wholeheartedly, others take offense at the truth as often it can hurt someones feelings, or they feel dissed. But like ive said before Id rather be hated for my truthful self than loved for something that Im not.
With the rise of the internet the fakeness in the world has multiplied many times over, with that I value honesty even more.

lol. Bloody whinging pommy bastard! ;P

@Ash: Of course the judgement of whether something is good or bad is purely a subjective one. I think 2Good and others have a point though: Lack of originality or a desire to produce something just for the love of it is a problem with a lot of Art. I think it's always been like that to an extent but I do feel that it's getting more accepted and consequently more is produced. A lot of people try to emulate something they've seen or heard rather than try to do their own thing. It takes some courage to do something different. And it's easier to remake or copy when your primary concern is how much money you make.

IMO

After thinking about this, I realized its a riddle, What defines art?

Gay people define art.. I know Ill take heat on that but, look in any art gallery, then look at the owner of said gallery.
I rest my case, and according to them , none of us slobs know what art is anyway.
