Yo if your like me you like to burn your beats onto your MD player and then leave tha house with something to listen to...
A common problem with Md players though and especially tha new MD players like tha one i have - tha NetMD MZ-N707 - is that there is no MD>PC...only PC>MD. That shit is wack! if your like me and you like to go to a hiphop show and dub it so that you got a fresh live recording that no one is going to have but then cant record it on a real cd for later you got a problem huh!?. Or say you dont have a beat on your HD anymore but its on your MD, then your also in a pickle huh!?
So, i stumbled upon this adapter but its pretty steep - what do you think is it worth it???

yeah mines one of tha newer inspired net md's. its pretty dope for sure but tha whole md>pc thing is fucking gay.....Also, afriquedeluxe is right that you can record that way, but tha downfall iz that it turns analog, plus you have to record in real time...basically its no good if you want to maintain 100% digital quality.
Plus i gotta wack soundcard with no opticals so its worthless in tha md recording area.
tha product on tha linkiz cool but its a rip off. Problem iz - sony is trying to not let people operate their md players this way due to bullshit copyright infringment policies, so theyre software is shit and tha only way around it till they ease up is to by gizmos like that, that also come with their own software and cables.

heres what mine looks like...it was pretty expensive so i dont think its a crappy model amongst tha rest.

I just read a review about tha product and it sounds as though this system is really only designed for older windows users with 98 and me, plus it sounded as though it doesnt actually transfer digitally and instead analog - something that i can already do - so im not sure but maybe its crap.

Hey,

I don't think it does what you think it does. Look at step 3 on this page:

http://www.xitel.com/product_mdpio_02.htm

It reads:

"The MD-Port I/O’s fully customized input and output have been designed to work flawlessly with all portable MiniDisc recorders. It’s optical output provides a pure digital pathway for recording from PC to MiniDisc, while it’s analog input allows you to record from the headphone output on your MiniDisc back into your computer in high fidelity. "

It sounds like you still have to connect the analogue output of the MD to an analogue input somewhere on your computer, be it a soundcard or this MD-Port.

I think you're fighting an uphill battle with this one, at Syntrillium we had to deal with tons of people not being able to record digitally from their MD players (they thought it was a Cool Edit problem) when it turns out that their players didn't even have digital outputs.

The only workaround we saw was complex, you need to have an MD player with a digital output, another device like a DAT machine that has both a digital input and output, and a soundcard that has a digital input.

1. Connect the digital output of the MD player into the digital input of the DAT machine.
2. Connect the digital output of the DAT player into the digital input of the soundcard.
3. Hit record/pause on the DAT player to monitor the input to the output.
4. Hit record on your computer (Cool Edit, Sound Forge, whatever)
5. Hit play on the MD player.

Seems a little complex...here's why:

There is a copy-protection scheme on minidiscs called SCMS (Serial Copy Management System), it is designed to prevent people from making digital copies of digital recordings. The way it works is by placing 'copy protect' bits in the digital stream...recording hardware like soundcards are supposed to recognise these bits and not record anything when they see them.

In your case, it is designed to piss you off, it's ridiculous that you can't transfer your own audio digitally.

If you try to connect the digital output of your MD player directly into the digital input of a soundcard, the soundcard will see the SCMS bit in the digital stream and not record anything. Some 'pro' machines like DAT players are exempt from having to recognise these bits, and they ignore this protection. They then pass the digital stream free of any SCMS bits, and the soundcard records it as a wav file.

You can read more about it here:

http://www.minidisc.org/faq_sec_6.html#SCMS

Take care,

Nick

PS: BigD, are you saying that you can transfer files from the MD to the computer across USB, and save them as wav files? My understanding was that you could only bring them into your computer as compressed ATRAC files, as far as I know there isn't any way to convert them to wav files. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hey,

Wow, that's cool!

Do you go to File>open in SoundForge and open it? SoundForge knows how to decode it? What version of SoundForge are you using?

This could be exciting news, I have some friends who use MD players...

Thanks

Nick

I had one. I ended up selling it. I shouldn't have. I like how I could easily edit, erase and change song order so easily. The only problem I had with mine was that it would get stuck in load mode. I had to unplug it two to three times to get it out. That shit sucked! Overall good machine minus that glitch.

Deuce,

If I understand bigd correctly, you transfer the file across USB from the MD player to the computer using the net md software, it gets stored as an ATRAC file on your hard drive. You then open the ATRAC file into Sound Forge and save it as a wav.

I've never seen this done, I'm just basing it on what bigd said, he'll know more about it I'm sure.

Take care,

Nick

Thanks V, Ill have look into that...I dont even use tha sony software cuz it blows...but i do use simpleburner to transfer tha audio to it.
I found on a forum that you can open nero make an image file>then next you load it onto your nero virtual drive plugin>and then simpleburner sees it as another legit drive and you can burn whatever you want onto your player. Shit, before that tha sony software was so wack that i couldnt even burn my mp3s i jus had on my drive cuz they wouldnt check out with tha copyright bullshit in tha program. Gay huh!?
Open MG is Fucking Crap!....But ill have to look and see if it really is an option to send audio back to tha pc? Theres this billshit - Check in - Check out crap - that stops you from transfering files if you transfered tha same file over like three times or if it doesnt check out on tha copyright...but ill have to try again.
