It is a General Midi and XG module. Usually you got 128 GM sounds-patches, plus probably 200-250 xg patches depending on model (MU-50,MU-80, etc.). Usually these Yamaha modules sounds nice and clear, GM suit every style as usual plus excellent exclusive yamaha xg patches.

Only that module and a MIDI sequencer like Cubase or an MPC and you can do any style music. These models sound tight and clean, makin your beats then good quality. They are 16/44 resolution like most machines anyway (Fantom,motif,triton...).

How much would you pay for it?

Hardware dropped since soft took a lot of place, you always can deal for good.

I think they're crap but I never really favored GM or XG shit, I shitted on SC55/88 - sound canvas in particular... I mean ...who would buy that crap really ? 01 is a piano, 02 is a piano .... big deal...apy twice as much and get wicked with a JV1080, JD990 and start buying expansion roms...

What is funny... if you ever get one of those Yamaha pci soundcards...also based on the MU series, I believe it was xg30, 50 and 90...get the 50 cheap and you can turn it into a CS1 rack hehe. I got one and never use it...that how good they are hehe.

I seen one on ebay that looked like it was goin to go for $80 but ended up at $150. But im also lookin at the TG55, cuz it looks like i see one about to go for $50. But i dont know.

I just always been samplin and now i wanna be able to do the beats that i come up with in my head instead of always gotta work with shit that has limits like samples. I love samplin and im still gonna do it. But i gotta check out some synths before i decide.

Formant, you say it's crap, but it's a good GM module sounding like GM module should sound.

Then you could say that GM is crap not that particular module. GM is GM. Plus he got XG sounds givin him like 200 patches more.

I think it's a good way to fuck around hardware for less than 100$.

Of course if he would have the cash he would probably get something better like a jv a xv or even a motif, triton or fantom, we would all do.

But here he only asked about that unit i think it's a fair module, will read any GM file of course and will get him used to midi programming easily.

I got one when they were going for like $250-300 from musicians friend. That was like 98. It has some good sounds especially the synths but like everything they might need some tweaking. If you wanna get a good yamaha XG model, you might wanna check out the Qy 70, there are some really good sounds in that one too. super cheap on ebay.
