Any DISadvantages to having 240 gigs of hard drive space?

my 80 gig hard drive is just about full. i am looking to add a second, since i am adding some new vst instruments, and a few of them are rather large.... so, i decided to get myself a nice 160 gig drive since it costs the same as the 120 drive.

yes, i know- overkill and all that, but i am getting a rather extensive orchestral library which will take at least 20 gigs on its own. i am also getting native instruments komplete and a few others.... so i will easily take up 60 gigs of that shortly.

i just want to know if there are any bad nelements to that amount of storage space. thanks.

I hear ya. I want to get a new drive because right now I have two 40GB drives and they're getting quite full. Maybe it's because of all the porn, I don't know - but that's off topic here.

I'm looking at one of those big beasts but the only thing I can see being a problem is when you want to defrag that big drive. Just imagine how long that would take! Other than that, I think it would be a great purchase.

I have a question for everyone. Do you guys backup all your sounds? I know XP is a very good system but it would really suck if you lost everything. Me, I have a USB hard drive that I use for a backup. What does everyone else do?

Well, one of my 80GB hard-drives was making funny noises and really scaring me that I was gonna lose everything; so, I finally just bit the bullet and bought another one, before I could send that one in for warranty repairs. So, now I have 2 and I just use the second one for a backup of the first. Now, I sleep much better at night...

I have a 160GB firewire hard drive (MAC OS)..... it's great!
Someone told me that a USB hard drive is faster at transfering information but Firewire is more stable .... who knows .... 160GB should do the trick. I bought my hard drive on ebay for $120 that's the best way to do it.

thats the funniest avi i have seen in a minute mad...

i can always defrag when i go to sleep, no problems there...

i remember a friend trying to tell me that 40 gigs was SOOOO much and that 80 was overkill..... i didnt know much of anything about computers at the time... and he (supposedly) knew quite a bit... i should make HIM buy the new one!

as far as backups go, i have all my original discs, so i am good to go on that if i have to reinstall them. i should probably save all my cubase projects to disc as well....

Firewire is the fastest as far as I know, followed by USB 2.0 and then USB 1.0. USB 2.0 might be pretty close to firewire though. I guess as far as backing up goes, it depends what you use your computer for. If it is mainly programs like Truth said, I wouldn't worry too much if you have the discs. If you mainly sample and you have spent millions of hours finding samples and chopping them up, I would be sweating without a backup. Before I had a backup, I probably would have had a heart-attack if my HD crashed. I had CDs burned as often as I could, but that is hard to do with as many samples as I have and how often I was adding to or changing them.... I'd say that HD's are so cheap nowadays that you might as well have a backup...

man i got ma 40gb and its all good and fine at the moment, but maybe its because i dont record vocals or nuttin. but yo an orchestral library thats that huge is ridiculous man, wont ur pc crash more ? with all those files? anti virus scans will take the piss man, am thinking cant you just get a sound module or sumtin with the orchestral sounds? and leave your pc just for sequencing....this way your pc would be alot more stable and reliable. thats the reason why ive stayed off audio logic and the vsts for it, it just ate up my pc

Has anyone tryed to have one computer be your instument with all your VST's on it and use another one just to record? Maybe like have some type of server thing going on.

afrique, if i had the $$$ to get a sound module, i would, believe me. i have been trying to get a major one again for a minute now, but the $$$ isnt there right now... and i have, uh, better resources for this, you get it?

Hey Truth,,ya friend was actually right,,,to an extent. The sound production that we do is what takes up so much space. Especially wav files and what not. For everything else other then production, ya dont really need a larger drive then 80GB's. I have a 60 and a 20. My 20 is for all my samples, vst's,,,etc.

adding to this topic: i was thinking of a bigger hd myself too but at the same time i am thinking, y not buy a dvd burner (or both) so i can backup mucht more stuff in the same amount of time and i need less discs to do so..

Firewire should be faster than USB 2.0.
I would go with an internal harddrive, especially if you have a new pc that runs serial SATA harddrives.
Whatever you buy, internal or external, I would just divide the drive into many smaller partitions of e.g. 20GB.
Also, I would run all your programs on your original drive, and move all samples, vst's etc to the new drive.
This is what I've understood as being the best way...I'm not an expert though.
