Hey I got a reality check today, my man Dre Knight of the production team the Narcotics and producer for Stimuli one of the sickest MC's right now, www.shastimuli.com dropped thru my lab today, he let me hear his new mixtape coming out and some tracks no one has heard Stimuli on and they were hot...the songs on the site are hot but you have to have heard the album material , he is absolutely one of the sickest producers I have seen or worked with and if you think 9th wonder is sick, he is currently working with Just Blaze right now because I think he is producing 5 tracks for Stimuli too...LOL...he not only flips samples like most hip hop producers, he's very accomplished musician, songwriter etc...hes produced stuff for Carl Thomas too so you know he is nice with the keys( I mean unbelievably gifted) and also doing hip hop...he has to be the most versatile producer and since he just inked in his deal with Virgin you are gonna hear more about him real soon....allhiphop.com and the source is already giving him props, I don't generally kiss other producers asses either...LOL but he showed me a couple things in my lab that need to be changed big time which I sort of already knew, he came thru though and worked out on MY equipment in the lab, made a couple of tracks and gave out pointers and showed me how his process is.....the weak point in my setup shined thru with someone else to put their eyes on your setup that has worked out in Top Notch million dollar labs....I had wrong cables, also he showed me some reasons why my sound isn't anywhere as near as good as it can be, I have been using my triton for loading my samples only because its easier to chop but I sell myself short, he showed me how to chop on the 3000 but recommended I get a 1000 or 2000...(which already had a fully loaded 2000 and sold it damn...) but the main thing about him is he told me most of my material is sub par, he let me hear his instrumentals ALL SOLID MUSICAL material, he told me I might luck out and sell something on a major but he gave me some pointers on chord structure and how to interpolate your samples, pick out melodies and chords in the sample and add to it and even make chord changes....he places samples and plays all around so you would never even notice the sample, he had this hot marvin gaye sample that was incredible .......anyhow it pays to team up with some other producers that have their shidd tight, that will go a long ways.....bottom line he told me he was going to help me but I have to take his advice and keep honing my craft.....and just concentrate on my overall package, keep it consistent and I will get there.........

Hey yall thanks, I am in no way gonna think my shidd is hott....no way....I mean I know it's not doo doo either....but I have fun with it......just look how long I have hung in here on Illmuzik!!!!!! Thanks!!! he told me he doesn't like how I sample...LOL he likes to blend the sample in ...I just do it kinda ruff...oh well Imma take everything he showed me and work off of that, but I gotta do a helluva lot of studying my music theory, seeing what he does in person, I really, really do understand how valuable either having a good ear or having solid musical background can help...CLASSIC & PG.....that's your queue but you guys have music and that's what he said as far is he wants to see production get back to, music....even though he can flip samples and all of that....I used to play backup boards in live bands and what he was doing I compare it to that.......having to play songs by ear...thats what I equate it to....he would play a some songs & samples and then play along with it and tune my triton accordingly to match the sample...etc....he would take a sample and replay everything in the sample...the strings the Keys the guitars etc...he said he uses a Roland JV and Triton to do all of the playing around a sample.....

Hey life is funny big D
I was in a similar situation today also(kind of the reverse). This producer cat came over the crib to day to check for some of my beats. Even though, he has been producing a lot longer then me, he kept asking me how come up with my chords and melodies. I mean i never knock another cats music but his stuff is average at best and he just couldn’t get his head around the stuff that I had

I told him about illmuzik and how being able to here different producers styles and ask questions has helped.

D, im pretty sure this guy your talking about is fire but your no slouch either, there are different styles out there and at certian times some are more commercially acceptable then others(for example your 80's comp beat could have went for big bucks in its hayday)

I say take everything with a grain of salt. The equipment stuff is defiantly golden (how to chop samples and stuff etc) But I don’t neccarlly agree with him saying(I don’t like the way u sample)

Personally I feel they way u sample that’s how I know it’s a BIG D beat. Just like he has his own thing u have yours too.

Lately ive been workin with gyal on tryin to learn how to sample etc. I definaly will take her advice etc but Im gonna incorporate it into my own style casue I could never do what she does!!!!

Like u said, keep it consistantant and progressive but defiantly do ur style

class......

this is a very good tequnique that im starteing to get into , buliding a whole song around a small sample, its the best of both worlds, u get the grittyness of a sample with the flexablitiy of instramenation. I think this is gonna be the next "trend" in hip hop production

afrique is really really really good at this

class...,

P.S big D where u stay it in DC metro, as u know i live in b-more but my grandfather lives in N.E. DC (right off new york ave and route 50) and im always on that side of town, school dosent start back up till jan 27 so i definatly would like to hook up

Hey man I stay out in VA right across the 14th Street Bridge in Arlington...but even though Dre Came thru...He is humble as Fugg too....but Class he already said that Just Blaze likes him in the studio because of the abilities with music.....yeah Afrique is definitely good at that...and its exactly what you said take a very small piece of a sample and build an entire song off of it...all I have to say is you might think I am crazy I never saw someone do that from the beginning to end and then to hear the song I am sitting there like Now what part is the sample and what part did you play....hahaha...I think its what they have been doing all the time though...like Dr. Dre and live players and Chucky Thompson back with tha hitmen, he explained how he freaked a bassline back on the Mary J, My Life song ....they fuse live instruments and synths with samples and interpolate...but he also made reference to a Lauren Hill song that she didn't want someone to use...so they had built the song already....all they did was take the sample out and use that....but they still had to pay but not as much for the interpolation......

Yeah bigD, i think its good that you had an professionnal opinion. Now, you can either take his advice and mix it with your own style. Im sure it wont be a problem for you. I think it is a good excercice to take a little sample and make something around it. When you reach the point that people are trying to figure out if you did some sampling or composing on a track, that means that you had Good arrangements. Practice is the key. As for me, im trying Real hard to make other stuff than R&b. I think am jealous of everyone who has hiphop in their blood. I need practice too lol.
I didnt know that having a good hear was important to produce. It is very motivating to have that kind of reality check. I feel you!

How are you going to be jealous of having hip-hop in someone? YOU GOT R&B! If you mean the current R&B, that's very musical. If you mean THE R&B (Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Ripperton, etc) then, my god.... utilize that talent. Incorporate that into your music. I wasn't joking when I said to check out Nicolay's production from Foreign Exchange.. Definately something worth listening to, if not to learn from it then just to listen to.

You envy us "hip-hop" producers making that boombap while us hip hop producers envy you and your "?uestlove-style R&B Hip-hop eclectic blend". How ironic, huh?

lol good point Dantson!!!!!
Your right!!

What fade should have done with the beat this competition, he should have give us a sample (im not talking about an instrument) so we could sampling or synth, around that sample. That could help BigD, Classic, and many others to make a good hiphop track. And also, we could see how everyone flipped the SAME sample in their own way and flava.
too bad it is too late.
