HR-16 or TR-505

Anybody here who can help me answer questions about the Alesis HR-16 and/or Roland TR-505. A very good friend of mine has been offered one/both very cheap, he doesn't really need the drums, but was wondering if he can use the pads to trigger drums in Reason, a bit like the MPD-16...(of course not the same quality)...can it be done?

It seems so, with their midi implementation etc...but just wanted to make sure.

Qualified answers would be very appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey,

Something else to consider...I had a TR707 many years ago and sold it to someone for next to nothing because I didn't think that it was worth that much. It turns out that it was worth a lot more than I expected because it had some sort of CV/Gate thing in the back which allowed older analogue sequencers to sync with it.

The point is that there may be some other features in either the Alesis or the Roland which may not seem that important right now but may come in handy later on.

Do the pads send velocity? Aftertouch?

Take care,

Nick

From what I can see, both can send velocity...

Btw, I feel you in regards to the fact that some things may come in handy later. I was considering going on a rampage trying to buy alot of old gear, cheap. I looked through our newspapers' used sections...there's a lot of damn gear, real cheap. Of course, not to just buy anything...but some stuff seems interesting.
