Copped this album a couple days ago and have been listenin for a minute. Aesop comes through again with that obscure sound which he has carried himself with all his career. Def Jux comes out with yet another dope album with "None Shall Pass". With self production on this album he keeps going out of the box with each track. Production also by Blockhead,Rob Sonic,El-P, and more makes this album one to mos definatly grab if you want some dope underground NY hip hop.

Last week Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass was up five spots to #97, with a likely thanks to MTV for holding him down with "artist of the week" publicity. But it seemed that once the week was over, so was the buzz. Aesop dropped to #169 this week selling 4k (29k total).

Shows how fucked up the game is...

Half the battle of moving units is getting people to know you exist. If MTV/BET had a diverse playlist more units would be sold.

Instead we get the same 10 terrible videos shoved down our throat. Same ten songs on the radio rotating. Record sales are down, because these outlets are only exposing the masses to bad cookie-cutter music. D4L blew up because of radio spins!

Capitalism thrives off of competition. Notice the golden era of Hip Hop coincided with a healthy dosage of smaller market labels. Loud, Rap-A-Lot etc, Death Row, Duck Down etc....

Since everything is under a few umbrellas.....Vivendi/def jam and Interscope are owned by the same parent company (Kanye vs. 50).... there's less competition and the quality of music is dwindling.

The cream of the crop can afford to be lazy. Under the current set up 50 cent, T.I. and Kanye are competing against the likes of Souljah Boy, Plies and Bow Wow, instead of Aesop Rock, Sean Price, Society of Invisibles, Royce Da 5'9", Brother Ali, Atmosphere or even Pharoahe Monch.

Imagine if Royce got spins like Plies...his worse record is a million times better than the anything Plies has ever imagined let alone recorded. Hell look at the career divergence of Royce and Eminem (essentially the same artist, yet one received airplay and the other didn't). It's been forgotten that MTV didn't want to play Eminems "My Name is Video" after only hearing an audio sample, until an intern at Interscope called them and told them he was white!

If you don't play a record or video for your audience how are they supposed to know it exists? In the case of Aesop, the audience was informed and they responded, imagined if MTV's plugging was sustained.

I'm sick of having to go to youtube to watch a Sean Price video. There's a reason why Jay-Z has been trying to sign dude for the longest.

yeah, and a lot of these rappers have a lot of "fiends" with wack ass music, they might be getting money but it's not good for music, any genre.. if money is your number one motiation to do music...... just go to fuckin school and get a job, instead of making half ass songs.

haha come on...back on topic.

aes rock has always been dope. a lot of people weren't feeling bazookatooth...and actually, that's one of my favorite albums of his...because of the production and the subject matter. blockhead has a sort of elegance to his beats which is sick...so im not putting his production down at all (fuck it i've worked with him) but aesop rock's production is so fresh...it's all space age but it's still really grimey.
people have a right to their opinion but i think the reason most people didn't like bazookatooth was because they find a favorite album by their artist and then they want that artist to keep coming back and imitating himself.
i saw it more as progression. that being said, i wasnt feeling the e.p. he put out afterwards...had a couple of dope songs but overall for some reason i didn't like it.
i gotta check out none shall pass though.

The album is ehh IMO. People just set me side ways when they want to defend an artist that puts his music out "for sale" and it flops. The artist goal was not to flop. If he wanted to stay underground he would've put his shit up for free download like you and Wings did Agent! Right? right!

It's one thing to dare to be diff't, but to be diff't,abstract and str8 up weird is something else. If the money doesn't matter, and that's not what you do it for give your shit away, plain and simple. If you put it out with a price on it and it flops except it and move on. NO EXCUSES! And don't turn around and say shit like this music or that music is whack! That makes you a hater and a cry baby in my book.

If you had a following that thought you were the next great thing for hip hop, then it would show financially. The same ones that are screaming this is whack and that is whack are the same ones not supporting these "fantastic" new artists. Talking loud, saying nothing, the first ones "cop n" shit bootleg style!

Iono I gotta disagree tho drama...Underground dont mean that you aint trying to sell units or that you suck if you aint got a million on the first day of release..

Chart position has zilch to do with talent nowadays

You're disagreeing with air because I didn't say he sucked or anybody else. You will probably never read words like that coming from me! I respect every style and I don't throw the word "whack" around like I c many members on Ill do.

Aesops been out 2 or more weeks so a first day or first week argument means nothing. The charts don't lie....his shit is sound scan'd and it's droping in sales by the day. And I never mentioned a word about anybodys talent level....nor will I. I'm stating facts that you can see....not shit you can feel. Dude has little to no following....it is what it is. Supporting your favorite artist with words and no cheddar makes you a half ass fan!

OOOHhhh thats right! Nah you right! you said he was GAY!! LOL
Thats true!

Nope! I said that I feel he's telling us he's gay based o articles, album cover, interviews etc etc. And the main focus was on what the affect it would have on hip hop if he is, what kind of blow will that deliver to the already embattled state of hip hop.

KEEP GOING..YOU'LL GET IT RIGHT! lol dudes be so anxious to prove me wrong that they take 90% of what I say out of context. COMICAL!
