a few tips:
if your working in 24 bit, convert directly to mp3 (instead of converting it after it's been converted to 16 bit wav/aiff). many M.E.'s recommend this to avoid any conversion fuck ups
make sure your track doesn't have any intersample peaks before you render it and before you convert it to mp3. this is important
if you're going to be using the mp3 format a lot, learn about what it does to specific freq. (i.e, which ones get cut off). base your mixing choices on that knowledge. it's more work but having separate mixes is a good idea. if you already do this for radio edit, t.v edit, no chorus, etc, having another for the 'net specifically or mp3 shouldn't be too painful.
