acid is basically a sequencer, i use it for arranging beats and editing the pitch but not much more. You can record vocals with it too, I've seen it used in studios.

Goldy_C,

I use ACID mainly for pre-recording and pre-arranging. Although it has several other functions such as sampling, time strecthing, effects, and a list of other goodies that will help you put your mix together. I do all of my final touches and editing with Protools. So to answer your question...it's kinda like both Reason and Protools but not as detailed. It's a good software program.

Acid is basically a sequencer. it allows one to "construct" a track from ready\premade loops (you can use vst\vsti as well).
the strength of acid is its looping tools. you can slice a loop to pieces, edit the tempo and much more. what it allows you is to BEATMATCH.
there are producers that are known to be using acid only, but i wouldn't recommend it as a standalone music production environment.
it has no built-in synths\quality effects, and most importantly: it doesnt have a piano roll of its own.
that's about it.

if you use computer software programs as your main source for creating music tracks then i would suggest acid also. yo goldy c, you can do just that.

actually, philsiarri is right in his own way.

and i quote: "The most prominent new feature in Acid Pro 4.0 is the ability to create MIDI tracks, either in real time from your own MIDI musical instrument or by "painting" notes in the program's piano-roll MIDI editor. Once you've created or imported MIDI files into Acid Pro 4.0, you can manipulate the contents of those files by using the Chopper, another built-in editing tool. The new Piano Roll editor in Acid Pro 4.0 lets you create or edit MIDI tracks in your project".
