live 3

hey everyone,

I've just joined this board the other day but I've read it for a little while now, and I've noticed that many of you are using FL studio, Cubase, etc.

I haven't heard much discussion of Live 3 by ableton (www.ableton.com).

I rewire reason into it and use it as mainly a creativity type of program, since it is unique in that it pays so much attention to live 'jamming' styles of sessions (hence the name).

I just wanted to know if anyone on this board uses it, and if so could they share tips that they have collected with their experience? If you aren't familiar with it i would suggest checking out the website above for the details. It's quite a versitile and powerful program.

My tip to share is as follows...When I'm working on dropping a large crasshing hat I extend the length of the sample by 1/4 or even 1/8 of the next bar. That way it gives such a distinct sound flexability to hang back or be released prematurely, which i think gives it a nice rhythmic touch. I guess it breaks it away from the 'drum machine' sound.

Well, I dont for the reason that I wont do livesets with a laptop but with a mpc instead. I think the reason that not many of us use Ableton Live is for the simple fact that a lot of the players here are into hiphop n breaks but I doubt if they do a hardware/laptop liveset during a hiphop venue. I mean what would be the point, it matters when you're from the UK producing D&B/Breaks and are in for a bit of live performance or you're a T.Dot Junglist bouncing to amen while flipping tracks n tweaking knobs like a sick tittytwister...

Ey, it all good!

but hiphop ??? The live appearance of 80% on this site will execute skills through mics or rekkids, not laptop though I'm in for a freestyle liveset hiphop with a bit of scratchin aside !

I use live all the time. I was an hardcore cubase user, but live is so much more creative. With the vst effects compatibility and rewire and the live effects, I really don't miss anything from my old cubase days. I guess someone could argu that my style ains't really hiphop. It ains't techno either tho. It a shame not more producer use this live for hiphop, it would make hiphop show less boring. Because face it, all groups don't have good DJ and the tracks is played from a dat or a cd-r, so whats is the difference between pressing play on a dat or in a sequencer on a computer. I guess there isn't. Of course playing the track on a computer make you able to perform some change on the fly and mix the track live.

I'm using live as well, I love the effects and you can rewire with all the professional sequencers for even more possibilities: Reason, Pro Tools, Cakewalk Sonar, Nuendo, Cubase. As stated before Ableton Live is very unique you can really jam with it. I used to use Acid a lot but then after I heard Ableton Live 3 it blew it out the water for what I needed it for.

I have heard similar comments about live. Yall know I'm an ACID user, but I would like to see this program.

Man, I have Live, but was never really able to figure it out. I think it has a confusing interface, and the MIDI never seemed to work right (it does sequence... doesn't it). I like the idea though. Wish I could more out of it.

sequence? it depend what you mean by sequence... you can sequence loop, organise them but you can't sequence notes like in your typical midi sequencer. IT's not a midi sequencer. If you got version 3 you can map a sample on you keyboard but really I find it a waste of time.
