ok i did a search and couldnt find the answer to this question

i have my mpc 2000xl plugged into my computer, which i sample from. my question is: WHY do I only have 29 seconds of (mono) sampling time???????? Thats only enough for my drums.

My mpc came with 2mb of RAM and I have an internal ZIP drive with a 100mb ZIP disc.

I want to be able to make a "PROGRAM" where I have 64 samples at my fingertips.....but ill need alot more sampling time to do that.

how do I get more sampling time? do I have to buy more memory or something?

HELP!!!!

Hey,

Yes, you need to have more RAM. With 2mb, you should be able to only load about 30 seconds of mono, 16 bit, 44.1khz samples. To get around this, you can convert your audio to a lower sample rate/bit depth, but you will lose out on quality.

The other option is to get more RAM...2mb isn't really enough if you're trying to have 64 sounds at your fingertips (unless you make each sample very small).

you still need the ram for when you have the samples inside the mpc. the zip disk can and does save your samples and larger files, but the mpc must be able to hold the files inside its own internal ram. i suggest buying more ram, asap! i had mine with the full 32 mb, and only once did i reach capacity!

Hey,

To repeat what everyone has said:

Any sounds that you want to trigger immediately have to be loaded into RAM because it is so damn fast...you send a trigger command to the MPC, and it sends the corresponding sample to its soundcard immediately.

Zip disks are really slow by comparison...if you sent a trigger command to the MPC to play a sound from the zip drive, it would first have to spin up the disk, then locate the sample, then transfer it to the soundcard...it would take literally a few seconds.

This is why Gigasampler was such a bad-ass program, it was able to do something called 'disk streaming' where it would send audio from the computer's hard drive directly to the soundcard without you having to first load the sounds into RAM. The benefit was that you could in theory load and play gigabyte-sized sample banks without having to have gigabytes of RAM installed on your machine.

Take care,

Nick
