    i'm pretty methodical about it. i just eq the drums to exploit whatever natural colors are there and move on. i usually grab 3 and 4 hihats and 3 snares and a bass kick or two. i figure out the layering when the beat is more complete so i can complement the production.

    i'm under the firm belief that there is a vocal ying to the instrumental yang of any beat. it just takes the right combination of the two. i've rocked many a beat that other's thought an emcee wouldn't fit on.

    for one. you need to treat it like an actual song. meaning just trying to mix your beat and an accapella like you have two turntables isn't the best way to do it. you can do it that way, but its better to multitrack your beat and the vocals(accapella). that way you can alter the vocals to fit...

    true. both versions have been floating around certain circles(illegally) for a couple weeks. i'm amped for commons new album though. i've loved every album he put out. he's the emcee that sends me back to the lab whenever i hear the new shit. he's my worst enemy and i'm his biggest fan.
