How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

Great posts ITT and exactly the kind of knowledge I'm looking for. Obviously I know there's never a 'one-size-fits-all' solution when it comes to making beats. Just wanting somewhat of a little direction, help filling in the gaps in my knowledge. On the mixing end I've never been trained, or had...

My thoughts on the long intro are as follows: 1. You'd be surprised just how much an artist (in this case a rapper) talking, or rapping or what not covers up something like that, or diverts your attention from the fact that there's noting else going on. 2. The second thing is that I feel like...

How much db variation from note to note until you begin to get into compression?

Do you have some sort of "order of operations"? I've always been under the idea that in regards to mixing; the first thing you do is adjust levels, then EQ, then whatever else after that. Is that wrong?

First one is awesome, nothing more to say. Second one, ehh. I'm against putting rap vocals on beats unless it fits perfectly. You can have an acapella at the exact BPM as your beat and it still won't sound right because the rapper is making sure to stress the syllables to hit on certain points...

Unison stuff? Not gonna lie it's pretty legit IMO...

So for example a reason I don't feel bad at all about using loops: I found a pretty awesome melodic loop that goes 4 bars. The problem I have with it is it only goes those 4 bars. I feel it could really be expanded on. I'm now going to remake that loop in Reason so that I can expand on it. I'm...

Ableton users I need help Re: Using MIDI loops in Ableton...

LMFAO the files needed to be unpacked. Turns out I don't even need Ableton either. I'm not usually the most computer savvy guy.

Ableton users I need help Re: Using MIDI loops in Ableton...

I just started using Ableton, that interface isn't exactly "user friendly". I'm pretty proficient in Reason, then less so in FL. So I figured learning Ableton would be a piece of cake but that interface is super drab and not really explanatory. I will learn it eventually but sheesh. Anyways, my...

Here's a nice quick breakdown of a top rap beat

Just shows how much goes into top end stuff: 55 tracks, lots of mixing and layering

All I'm saying is if you have the money to spare it's worth it in my opinion.

I agree with everything you posted. Judging by your post, you know as well as I do there's basically not enough time in the day to learn everything we'd like to learn. I mean under the umbrella of "producer" you could learn about mixing, recording, mastering your whole life and never even touch...

My brother showed me that a couple years ago, have to look into it.

Beat remakes are in my opinion the number one greatest practice tool for making beats

Oh yeah man right now I deconstruct beats just to examine them from a dynamic aspect, and how they fit that in with the composition.

Started with the MIDI Chord pack, really like it, helps me make much more complex ideas much faster than I would be able to on my own. Based on how much I liked the MIDI Chord pack I decided to get the MIDI Drum Blueprint. My credentials: Made my first full beat around 10 years ago. Have been...

What will make you want to use a compressor?

Do you hear songs in other songs that aren't necessarily credited?

A good example of this is the Kanye West song 'Runaway'. There's a string part in the song that to me sounds awfully close to a part in 'Nothing Compares To You' by Sinead O'Connor.

I'm crazy about that new Bruno Mars/Anderson Paak song, this guy does a great breakdown of the piano parts

For my tastes it's far and away the best R&B song to come out in a while.
