The part about the mic... I had to tube up : )... I do agree that a mix is mostly about ears and room acoustics, but I do feel that the songs I like have a certain "console sound" to them... I've been taking a minimal approach lately and I think the emulations help give it that character... -

I don't know much about your setup, but in my humble opinion... I think the levels are the biggest thing... the instruments I would bring up some... and add some limiters and compression to even things out where needed... and lastly a touch of bussed reverb on certain sound to add space... just...
