Wassup everybody, I got a quick question. I see studios that use computers in there set up, with pro tools or logic but they always have a big ass anolog mixing console. What is the use of the console, why not just get a control surface or get a external preamp and go straght into the soundcard. does the console make it sound better, or can it control fader movements.

People really enjoy the hands on control they get with an actual analog console. Not to mention the quality sound some of the high end vintage ones can produce.. The hige consoles have so many aux in/outs and ways to route your signals, it's easy to hook them up to all their crazy preamps and shit.. there's more reasons, but Im sposed to be working right now and i cant get too in depth

part of the reason is alot hardware producers will sequence the whole track on there gear and all that then drop in protools. These people are usually the ones that were hesitant to switch over to protools. They think it sounds wack unless its analog till the very end.

routing aswell.. Huge studio's normally have alot of Clients.. can't have everyone hovered over the computer now can we?.. plus the hands on board its easy to call up certain channels in a Mix and timing as in how fast u are is vital when working with people

althought i love my pro tools, nothing compares to the sound coming directly through a large analog console.....as many ppl on this forum know, im at Full Sail for recording arts....this month we're in Recording And Mixing Consoles

Basically a full month using the SSL 9000J, the Amek 9098i (Rupert Neve's design), and also the Sony DMXR100 digital board.....The pre-amps on that Amek are in a class of its own and its great to have the automation....even if you just record through the console straight to protools instead of tape, you can still keep that great analog sound providing your resolution in protools is good (24 bit 96khz)....on top of that you can route the signal almost a million differnt ways and you always have that flexibility....also, a nice big ass console just feels a lot better than a mouse lol.....

As far as home studio use go I don't see a need to have a huge mixer if your recording to software and then mixing down in the box. I connect out my gear extra outs right to my motu 828 8 analog inputs and ada convert 8 inputs and I can record up to 16 tracks at once but I only have a 4 channel mixer. The reson for this just cause I have a mpc a motif and a nord lead and I use the 4th channel to hear my sound card. I do all my mixing in the computer and I am not gona mix it down to tape so there is no need to have a 32 track mixing board cause I'm not bring the 16 or more tracks bakc to the mixer.
