why do people "Gate" their drums?

so, Gating cuts off a sound relatively abrubtly as oppossed to letting the sound have it's natural decay...

I'm curious as to what the main reasons why people gate their drums - anyone know?

that's interesting. I've never really messed with Gating before... so basically if people program some drums and the decay on some of th drums sounds is too long, these use gating to remedy this?

any other reasons why it's used?

In addition to what NNZT said, gating a reverbed drum sound is very common and has really distinctive, if very unnatural, sound....

I will give you a little hint at the end of this, gating works good for instance if you have not sampled a clean 1 shot hit from a record or other source sometimes, that may either have some background effect etc that you do not want...since I am a drummer I can tell you that gating drums started in studio recording of drummers, sometimes kicks and snares in a studio have a very long decay and create untuned harmonics you might not want in the recording so a gate is used to cut it off...another approach that is an alternative to gating is I process samples in soundforge that either I do not want a long decay or maybe that contain a background instrument and I cannot find a clean 1 shot on the record, I use an envelope on it , I have being using envelopes on my drums for awhile if you mess around with it enough you can lift a snare or kick out of a mix that you would normally not use......

classic example being just about every phil collins song he is the king of gated reverb ! lol

sometimes it can also be used to give a more punchy feel, as added punch can come from the sample being cut short by the gate !

DaSon, you can buy a gate/compressor which is hardware, or you can use some software integrated into your hardware, or there are software applications. Yeah, kinda confusing, but all hardware is software loaded in memory on a "portable" unit. Out

so they say that when you gate the snare ......your creating space...silence ...between stuff ...creating rhythm......

Word, cuz it started with hardware anwyways.....Personally, i usually do like NNXT said also, and simply shorten the sound to the desired length rather then gating on the regular, tho on rare occasions i do use a verb-gate....like he said, its all for feel...:)

You create more headroom with a gate on the drums, hiphop specificly is mostly dry drums with very little reverbs. In that you have more headroom giving the rest in the mix more definition.

commonly used to get rid of spill (so you have more control over the drum sounds at mixdown) from drum recordings. also commonly used to get rid of unwanted low level background noise like hiss etc.

Can someone post a good gate vst? Cant seem to find one...

I use Fruity...

Normally, I do that "gating" by playing with the envellope normally, but the enveloppe has no effect on a reverb added with a plugin...
